    ACS

What does the American cancer society actually do to help people? My mother called today to get help with gas for driving back and forth and they advised they couldn't help her unless she was homeless. What is this about?

That's not entirely true. I'm afraid she either got bad information or she misunderstood them. American Cancer Society isn't a service to supply gas, bread, light bills, etc. They are the leading force behind finding a CURE for cancer. ACS has funded 46 Nobel Prize winning researchers that have found many treatments and procedures, drugs, etc. that are responsible for several of us on the site for being alive today. The research that they funded found the PSA test.

While I know it's frustrating to look for help and not find it, in the wrong place.

So I am going to start you off with some info, and you will have to do some leg work. There are lots of places that offer help for different situations. But it's not like you call them up and they send you a check, you have to fill out some information and prove that you need the help. (yes there are some people that will claim cancer to get free stuff) First I am going to forward this to the ACS, someone might call you or email you with questions. Next call the hospital your Mom is being treated at and ask for a social worker, explain she needs help and they will start there. Also, I know the ACS used to have a program to help with gas with shell cards, I don't know if it's still there. Ask the ACS for a patient Navigator, they are someone who will help you search for resources.
Next, look at the top of the page on the right, the resources page, that will show some resources available for your zip code.

Others will also put some links on here for you to follow.

We wish your Mom the best, and please try to be patient, it's hard, but it's the best.

The ACS is a non profit organization supported by donations. They have a few specific funded programs that provide services like rides to treatments, and lodging for those who have to travel for treatment, but to my knowledge, they do not provide any kind of financial stipends to individual cancer patients. They are predominantly a clearing house for cancer awareness and education.

Here is a link to the ACS financial aid page with 4210 results in a search of their page for financial aid. Some of these are ACS programs, others are other organizations that ACS will point you to.

Thank you for the information.... I will for sure check out these other resources. We have already talked to the social worker at the hospital and they are actually the ones who suggested contacting the ACS. Then like I said the representative we talked to literally told us that there was nothing they could do unless she was homeless.
