    AML and depression

Am 62 and female and have been on depression meds for 20 years. I was diagnosed with AML on June 24 and checked into hospital the next day. I received the initial 7day chemo and have had 3 consolidation treatments. During this time, I maintained a genuine positive attitude with no depression. Currently I need no more chemo, however, my depression has worsened and have gained 20 pounds. I need help. Any suggestions?

Exercise is a wonderful suggestion, it has helped me tremendously and I am no longer on any anti depressants...I also go to a support group once a week, and I see a therapist almost weekly and my psychiatrist once or twice a month! that probably sounds like too much but I am taking advantage of all available resources because I am still in treatment. Check with your hospital social worker hopefully , look for support groups and hopefully you are near a cancer support community of some sort...something like the Benjamin center or WeSparks in California, or Gilda's Club which is the East coast...the cancer support centers always have free exercise classes such as Zumba, Yoga, Tai Chi....they should have something that works for you...even a knitting or quilting class could be a lot of fun. And they may have free therapy sessions available as well. This WhatNext site is wonderful, but it is much better to see people in person and also to take real exercise classes with other cancer survivors. It really helps, believe me. And stay away from sugar, it is a natural depressant and it also is unhealthy because cancer seems to feed off of it. Good luck and blessings! xoxoxoxoxo

Ellie, chemo affects the seretonin levels in the brain that cause depression and it is quite likely that it caused changes that you are experiencing now. Since this can take several weeks to occur it can be difficult to connect to a direct cause. The good news is that there are several anti depressants available. Please see the Dr. that is over seeing your depression meds as soon as possible to get them adjusted and be patient as it can take a couple of weeks for the changes to take full effect. Good luck!!!!!!

exercise a good idea !! a good long walk in nature like a wooded area or if you can a walk at the beach by the ocean is great but you need to do it daily some days you will walk a fair distance and other days when your energy level is not good you will walk a shorter distance it doesn't matter the distance as long as you get out regularly…Yoga for beginners is also very healing there are simple poses that one can do plus the breathing exercises are great
