Have they indicated whether or not you would get an "auto" transplant (your own, altered/prepped blood cells) or an "allo" transplant (from a donor's cells)? If it is an allo transplant, it is best if you are in remission prior to transplant. They will search for a donor. Best case scenario is a sibling donor (your siblings would get their blood tested), but they do prefer to use younger donors (45 and under). That search for an unrelated donor can take up to 6 weeks. Your transplant doctor would also need to decide if you get a "mini-transplant" or a regular transplant. That indicates whether or not, and to what extent, you would go through conditioning of heavy duty chemo and full body radiation in the days immediately before transplant takes place. This wipes out the immune system and (hopefully) kills all leukemia cells so the new cells can take up residence and establish themselves. I would encourage you to read the "Patent" portion of Be The Match web site: http://bethematch.org/
