    Are you consumed with worry? It's one of those things that is hard to not do, but it's not productive or helpful, so why do we?

    Our blog post today talks about the worry that comes with a cancer diagnosis and how you might beat that worry back and be happier, more relaxed, less stressed, and a more productive person while dealing with cancer.       For those who are chronic worriers, or are bothered by worry, I have a suggestion. Get a diary or spiral notebook. Write the worries down as they occur. Each week, two weeks or monthly, go back and cross off those worries which never came to pass. I'm not a betting man, but I'll bet that most, if not all, of those worries will be crossed off.

      This method allows one to see that there never was any substance to those worries and gives one a sense of power over the worries. We can figuratively "destroy" them with our hands and our pens. It is taking action against the worry whgich disturbs our peace. In each life, some bad, some evil things happen, but the lesson of the"serenity prayer" is a good antidote and inspires us to action instead of worry.

      Worry is corrosive to hope. It is corrosive to optimism. It wants to drag us down when we need to be built up.

      Good suggestion PO! I like the quote that when you are worried about something just remember that up to this point, you have survived 100% of the previous things just like this that you have worried about.

      My mother always said that there was no point in worrying about things that you couldn't change. I try to follow that advice, but sometimes I don't. I do try not to let worry consume me. I do make myself look at things realistically and not go off the deep end.

      Of course I am consumed with worry. When your spouse of 40 years has a life threatening disease and your whole life has changed and continues to change, yeah I worry about everything. Don't really see any way around it. I no longer worry about small things though, theres that....

      It's funny, but I didn't worry throughout my cancer treatment. I said to myself, "That's why I'm paying all of these doctors." But once I started having my regular scans, the worry began. Exercise and painting help distract my "over-active" mind.

      I did worry at the beginning of my journey 11 years ago until I was told by Dr. Bradford to not worry until he told me there was something to worry about. He told me to put all the worry and stress in his hands and use my time more productively by enjoying things that I love doing. Most of my worries at the beginning were about whether I would survive, where was money coming from since I couldn't work, who would help my Mom if I couldn't, and was I doing the right thing and making the right decisions. Dr. Bradford sat me down and said, worrying isn't going to do anything but make things worse and wouldn't change anything. He told me it was time to put my faith in myself and the doctors who were taking care of me and everything would work out for me, which they have for the most point. To keep my mind off things, I decided to find things to occupy my time like swimming, reading, going to the beach, and taking care of my Mom.

      It definitely has subsided in me the longer I am NED (going into my 2nd year). Once you get out of the vicious cycles of appointments and procedures, you can actually have a day or two where it's not front and center in your life. Sure, the aftermath that cancer leaves on your body is a constant reminder, but it becomes the new norm. I really think at this point I have used up all of my worry cycles!

      Nope. Definitely not consumed with worry. I rarely worry about much and definitely spend only minutes a month, if that, worrying about my lung cancer. What good would it do?

      I think it is just human nature. Some of us just deal with it better or differently than others. It seems to help me to stay busy, remain in the moment and pray.

      I am trying to cast my cares to God and control my thoughts. I have chronic depression and anxiety. I can and will get better.
