I'm not sure, but I'd hazard that it's because milk has less water and more dissolved solids than the cells in your body. That means that water would tend to leave the cells and enter the milk rather than the other way around. I know that this process is what happens when you drink sugary or alcoholic drinks. You may think that cold one hit the spot, but it didn't really help. :-)

What Harry said. Dairy provides some hydration, just not as much as water. If, for example, your goal is to drink 64 oz of fluids per day, eating/drinking 64 oz of dairy products/per day would not provide 64 oz of fluids because of milk solids, Not to mention the excess fat, sugar, calcium, and lactose that 64 oz of dairy products a day would contain. Substituting a small amount of your daily fluids with milk is fine, maybe 8 oz of milk for 4 oz of water, but in terms of consistent hydration, water is your best bet.

Dairy not only has solids but ... think of Elmer's Glue. It is made from nearly 100% mild solids. Gunk like that isn't actually hydration, is it?

If you are having trouble drinking so much water, try eating your liquids. Whole juicy fruit and greens are quite hydrating. A nice salad (lighten up on the dressing) which is well chewed (to get your saliva flowing and to mash up the leaves to make digestion easier on your body) helps a lot with hydration.

I soak my nuts and seeds prior to eating them in order to #1. sprout them and #2. make them moist instead of dry. Pineapple and papaya are available most of the year. Persimmons ought to be around.

Also, if you don't keep well hydrated and produce the saliva, prepare for teeth problems down the road. Getting enough liquid ought to be the least of your problems. Such a small thing in order to feel better. My floor muscles aren't what they used to be but I get plenty of liquid. In fact, you will find that better hydration means fewer trips to the loo.

Congrats on the cancer being in the past.

I have the same problem, I just forget to drink water although I know I should. I happen to enjoy tea and I do drink quite a bit of that each day (green, black, herbal...). I've been told that can sub for water as can coffee. Of course, there is the caffeine to consider but if you are a coffee or tea lover that may help.
