Best advice for the caregiver who gets a bad cold...

Yikes, I caught a cold. I can't go to work (it's nose blowing, sneezing, coughing loud) but I'm scared to stay home as I don't want to expose John to it. What do you do when you catch a cold?

First of all take care of yourself. Rest and get plenty of fluids. If possible, limit the time you spend with John right now to avoid exposing him to the virus. Cough and sneeze into a tissue or the crook of your arm. Only use a tissue once then throw it out. Wash your hands frequently and/ or use hand sanitizer. Have John wash his hands often too. Feel better soon!

I had a little cold during my dad's cancer treatment, and asked the nurse at the time. She said to wash my hands regularly, and try to stay 6 feet away most of the time.

I also had disinfectant wipes, and would wipe down door knobs, and surfaces. I did try wearing one of those ear loop masks, but it was too uncomfortable long-term.

(at any rate, dad did not catch the cold)

Buy those disposable hand towels for the bathroom so that you do not share a common towel. Maybe you might want to wear a ear loop mask. I saw a physician wear one of those at a hospital, probably for his own protection as well as his patient's protection. If you have a dishwasher, that could sterilize dishes for both of you.

That's basically what you do: take care of yourself, use good handwashing, and try to limit exposure to John. I have worn the ear loop mask, and it was okay, but uncomfortable. I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you for your help and advice. Despite having a nasty cold, John didn't catch it and neither did my team at work. I didn't do the face mask, but keeping folks 6' away along with hand washing / disinfecting did the trick. Thank you!
