Hello, I'm an oncology nurse and no,
currently the standard treatment according to the NCCN guidelines are the three approved therapies, Gleevac, Stivarga and Sutent which are all targeted therapies.

      Hey, Ironmikey,
Gleevec is more effective on GIST than the other two drugs, and sometimes they increase the dosage mg of Gleevec. How long have you been taking Gleevec, and have you experienced side effects? If you read up on GIST, you'll see that until about 20 years ago, there were no drugs that worked on GIST, so we are fortunate.

I asked about immunotherapy last office visit, and the oncology resident told me the FDA hadn't approved it for immunotherapy yet. However, I wish I'd asked if there are any clinical trials for it. I see my doctor next week, so I'll ask then.

My tumor is growing adjacent to my liver, and when I asked what would be done if it grew into the liver, they told me there were procedures available. (I've also heard that if they remove part of your liver, it grows back!)

Hey BarBarain Bham. Mine is already in my liver and they said although its a small portion of the liver I was told it is spread around the liver too much for liver surgery to be an option ):

I've never seen those bumper stickers, etc. Let us know what your doctor says is "next." Don't worry---it doesn't help anyway.

ironmikey, During a visit with our surgeon my wife asked him if pills could be used for my chemo? He said this type of surgery calls for IV chemo. It may be otherwise with different doctors...I don't know. My best to all of you...Russ

I don't understand either, since GIST is only effected by the 3 drugs Carm listed, and I'm almost sure they are all chemo pills.
