Chemo & Radiation before a Whipple Procedure

Are there others that had chemo & radiation treatment recommended before having the Whipple Surgery. Would be interested in getting your thoughts. A lot of the major hospitals like John Hopkins recommend getting the surgery right away.

The question I would have is how soon they would be able to do the surgery, and then how long after the surgery would you have to wait until you recover and they can start chemotherapy. You know where the tumor is, and where you're staged right now, but you don't really know what's going on with all those tiny cancer cells in your body, and in my opinion you don't want any rude surprises while you're waiting to start chemotherapy-- like a growth in your liver. If you're going to have to wait a month until you can get an appointment with a surgeon, I think you do whatever you can get started with immediately. The way the oncologist explained it to me when it looked like dad could have surgery, it makes sense to do chemotherapy first. I really know nothing about radiation because we've never dealt with that.

At the same time, get that process started with arranging for surgery with the help of your oncologist and surgeon. Good luck with your treatments.

my husband had Chemo for 3 months before his whipple. It helped to decrease the swelling that he had from pancreatitis. After the 3 months of chemo, he had a successful whipple and then followed by 3 more months of chemo. My surgeon, who has done alot of whipple surgeries, told me that the big cancer centers often recommend doing chemo first to shrink the tumor before they do surgery. I know MD anderson has recommended that, or so I have been told. We didn't do radiation, so I am not familiar there.
      Good luck

I was diagnosed 2 years ago with pancreatic cancer. I went to Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. My Doctors recommended chemo and radiation before the Whipple Procedure. The way they explained it made sense. The treatments before the surgery should either kill or chase into the tumor those free floating cancer cells and shrink the tumor. Making it easier to get it all when they do the Whipple. Good Luck!
