Right there with you sista. 4 years for me, twice I have choked on things, once a pill, once some food. My wife has had to learn to do the Hymlik (however) on me in case it happens again. Scared the XXX out of me. I can't eat much bread at all. I choose my foods by the SLIDE FACTOR. I sound like a dog fight going on when eating, all the growling and grunting I have to do to get stuff to go down. It does seem to be getting better, they said I could have a swallow study done, and physical therapy. That just seems silly to me, I figured out how to get stuff down, that's about as good as it's going to get.
I have been radiated twice, 24 years ago, and 4 years ago. Also, teeth are falling apart. How about yours?
Best of luck to you, hope it starts going down smooth.

Ditto. Finished radiation in early June, and thought I'd be "normal" in a few weeks. My doc tells me it may be two years before I'm close to "normal". I am eating lots of soups, vegetables, fruits and fish - anything that's soft and moist. The good news is I've lost fifty pounds and my blood pressure and cholesterol are way down...

After my last radiation treatment of my neck in Jan 2008, it was over 6 months before I could swallow anything but liquid. The swallowing gradually improved, and is much better now, but has not returned to where it was before the treatments. My ENT said that it could be improved with surgery and I said no thanks. No more surgery unless absolutely necessary.

      Hi Tracy,

Yes I have issues with this. I am 8 years out from treatment. I have had my throat stretched about 5 times but it is still very small. I always have to ask whether meds can be crushed. Iron can not be crushed so I take it in liquid form when I need it. I do have a very small thyroid pill I am able to get down, but it does get stuck from time to time and I have to be very careful.

I too am having swallowing problems. It's been a little over a year and I got the feeding tube removed 5 months ago. Like most of you here I have to find foods that will slide down easy. Yesterday I was celebrating my birthday with friends at the Red Lobster and I ordered shrimp and linguini and I choked on the shrimp. Not fun. I also have a burning sensation in my throat, does any one have this problem?

I had radiation therapy that ended 2 months ago and still have swallowing problems. I also have a very swollen tongue. Still have the Cancer and am headed to surgery as final option on 12-19.
