You first must make sure you prep the surface well by sanding it as smooth as possible with at least 300 grit or higher. Then you need a very good quality primer and high gloss paint. Apply thin coats and lightly sand with 400 to 600 grit paper between coats. You will likely want at least 3 coats. If you can't get it glossy enough you can try over coating with a clear high gloss polyurethane again sanding between coats. I suggest that you try this out on a small scrap piece to practice and test the results. You can buy a small amount of paint for the test before buying what you need for the whole project.

I am working as a salesperson for http://www.modern1furniture.com/ , modern furniture store, we sale lots of high gloss furniture and need to repaint some time to time. My advise is to use automotive paint. You sure have to prime it first. You can buy this paint from any local body shops suppler, they can also recommend you right type of primer / paint. Make 3-4 coats. As a final step (if you are picky person) you have to buff it to get rid of dust / dirt.

You need a good primer coat product. Make two applications of this coating before applying a flat paint. Don't scrimp on the primer coat so you get the effect you need for your furniture. If you have other modern furniture replica that needs some coating, you can use the same primer coat later on.
