    exercise and chemo

    I had my first chemo yesterday. I feel good so far. I am a gym rat and love to exercise. Nurse said as long as im not running marathons im OK. I want to take a half hour boot camp class today. I will slow down if tired. Im in great shape no other medical problems. Did anyone else take classes like this right after chemo. I am going for white blood count shot later today and took Tylenol and claritan. Thanks. Just wondering how many others keep up the more intense work outs.

      Did not take a class or go to boot camp, but I did play a game of basketball with the 13 year old young man that lives next door, Eric said he was going to take the rust off me. Took me a while for him to take the rust off but left him shaking his head, the lady has game he said!

      Hugs, healing vibes and prayers. I continued taking Pilates and yoga classes as well as walking through out my treatment, this included during radiation. My best advice is listen to your body, and don't expect to work out as hard and long as you did pre treatment. It is better to less and wish had pushed your self, then to push your self and be flat on your back (figuratively I hope) for the next few days.

      I sopped taking group classes and worked one on one most of the time, The instructor work with where I was at when I show up for class.

      Continuing being active made me fell very good and positive about myself and my body. Go for it.

      All through chemo (so far), my only rest days from exercise have been the days of infusion. While getting A/C I resumed exercise the day after chemo at lower intensity and built back up. (Returning to baseline took less time with each successive infusion.) Didn't have to decrease intensity after my first Taxol infusion the other day (less hard on the body than A/C). I exercise at home and listen to my body. I believe that exercise has helped me get through chemo -- and the endorphins are terrific for my mood.

      I'm a dancer and I kept practicing off and on during chemo....exercise as much as you usually do, definitely push yourself but be gentle. But it is a delicate balance because your body really needs a ton of sleep and rest to restore and fight the cancer. If you need to spend days in bed, do it! And then slowly work your way back...again be gentle now with your body...walking is probably the best thing to do actually. I would be concerned about crowded gyms and swimming pools while your immune system is compromised. But check out your local cancer community because they always have FREE exercise classes available and geared towards people in treatment. Good luck and God bless!

      P.S. There are some scans where you aren't supported to have strenuous exercise for a few days beforehand like PET/CT's.

      I didn't go to the gym prior to cancer but once chemo started (tykerb, herceptin, taxol) I started going to the gym 2-3 days a week and I would also cut the grass with a push mower once a week. Once taxol built up I would get slower at the gym & when cutting grass I would have to stop and take a minute after a couple rows. I only did cardio for the 18 weekly treatments prior to surgery. After bilateral mastectomy & hysterectomy I did stat adding weights to my routine. My training was amazing & would take a look at all my blood work each week. I love to see u working out! I believe it helped me!! Good luck to you.

      Too late now, since you've already been, but here's something to think about. All the previous answers are focused on the act of exercising, and I absolutely kept doing that throughout as my body allowed me to. The concern for me about a boot camp class is germs! The gym is DIRTY. And you have very few white cells left right now. If you come in contact with a nasty germ, your body won't have the cells to fight it off, so it'll just start heating up. They call it a neutropenic fever. Ugly stuff...and it lands you in the hospital with all your visitors wearing masks. I thought I was avoiding germs by working out at home and running outside...they think mine came from planting spring flowers. Bacteria in the soil and all that. Just be cautious.       I continued my zumba classes all the way through my treatments. My doctor's said as long as I felt up to it to continue. I was a gym rat also before my diagnoses. I think that definitely helped me to stay working full time and doing zumba through treatment I was 50 and in the best shape of my life. I did cut back alot though mainly because of my blood count being low and them more worried about me picking up an illness in the gym more than exercising. Therefore, I did the zumba over the treadmills, weights etc. Felt I was not touching anything after everybody else all day. Good luck. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten back into the gym like I was before my diagnoses. Life has gone on and my work scheduled has changed majorly so unable to get my workouts in like prior. I'm no longer working in the same town as the gym and have no gym in the town I'm in. I know stop making excuses....lol. Stilling doing the zumba and some speed classes.

      I think a lot is going to depend on how your body reacts to the chemo, which is a very individual thing. Since you're used to that level of exercise, you should be able to continue, but keep in mind that the side effects of chemo tend to be cumulative, so as treatment goes forward, you may have to modify your activity level. Also, you're likely to have some bone/joint pain and/or flu-like symptoms from the Neulasta/Neupogen injections, so those days you may have to scale back. At one time, I was teaching 10 Zumba classes a week, but since my diagnosis, I have not taught at all...now, I have bone mets in my spine, so I have had to give up all forms of exercise that are considered high impact. Instead, I take aqua aerobics 6-7 days a week, which allows me to work out without risking my bone structure. The points of a gym being "dirty" are absolutely real...but they will be monitoring your white count regularly, and if it drops beyond a certain point (it shouldn't if you're getting Neulasta), they will advise you to take extra precautions in public places. You could always get DVDs to work out at home if the gym is not feasible. During the height of my chemo last summer, I simply walked every day.

      Because of my low blood count , I was unable to exercise as I usually did. But I walked my dog three times a day.When I finished my treatment I was able to go to a community therapeutic exercise program. I do heated water exercises ,strecth and tone and zumba in a heated pool. I also have fibromyalgia, so I have to pace myself. You have to do what is good for your body and health circumstances.

      It depends on each person. I was doing good. I actually did ok, through the A/C, but my white blood count (and all of my other counts) tanked out shortly after starting the Taxol and I had to stop the chemo treatments. I had to quit doing anything except for pretty much staying in bed. I have restarted my chemo, and tried to start exercising again, but my asthma has flared up. I find it very difficult to breathe and my body is just so weak. I will be so glad when this is over.
