    Exercise as Good as Tamoxifen in Reducing Breast Cancer Recurrence?

    I met a friend of a friend over the weekend who turned out to be an oncologist. She said that exercise has been shown to be as effective at reducing breast cancer recurrence as Tamoxifen. Did I hear that correctly? Has anyone else heard that? Unfortunately, someone interrupted our conversation and I did not have a chance to follow up with her regarding her comment. I'm wondering if I heard this correctly. I actually have a follow up visit with my oncologist in a few weeks and will ask then but am wondering what you folks have heard.

      I've often heard that exercise is important in helping to prevent many types of cancer. The reality is that my lifelong exercise habits didn't keep me from getting cancer to begin with so I don't believe exercise will keep me fom getting a recurrence. It's definitely part of the puzzle but not the whole answer.

      I agree with Gwendolyn..I think its part but not the whole. I have the inherited EGFR lung cancer mutation..My entire family has been wiped out by cancer going back to my grand parents in Greece.

      Ain't no amount of exercise, foods or anything else that will change it.
      Exercise will help but its only a part of the picture.

      Hi Bug,

      I'm Aliza, a BC patient and the site's resident unofficial Medical Librarian. I agree with both Gwendolyn and CAS re exercise. As someone who takes Tamoxifen to block estrogen (for ER+ BC), exercise doesn't affect the hormones to that degree, otherwise younger women would be starting menopause solely on the basis of exercising (didn't affect us that way in high school or at the gym...;)). Exercise as Gwendolyn says is an important part of the puzzle, but not the whole picture.

      Exercises is one of many ways to keep our bodies fit and healthy. I'm sure it is one component in helping people reduce cancer risk in general, but I'm sure that there is more to it, and each person and case is unique.

      I'm am convinced that the fact that I have been physically active my whole life, even during treatment, walking , and take Pilates are my primary exercises these days - i try to get in 5 days a week of at least 20 min light activity, have helped me fight my cancers and keep me stable.

      You should follow up immediately to get clarification. As another constant exerciser, it didn't keep me from getting cancer, but I certainly think it has helped my fight.

      because of the type f my cancer I do not have to use this drug, but I think that exercise is one of the excelent weapons we have against cancer.....but not by themselves and not as a replacement of traditional treatments......together with my traditional treatments (surgeries and chemos) I try as much as I can to eat healthly (lots of changes in my diet because I think that was the worst item at the risk items listed to be in favour of cancer that I had), to sleep 08 hours a day, to be positive and to exercise at least half an hour a day (that most time because of chemo puts me down it is a simply walk with my dogs or some yoga section for cancer healing).......Although exercises could not prevent me from having cancer (an I have practive sports throughout my life, such as riding horse, playing tennis, dancing, etc) I am pretty sure it does play a great role to help me to recover faster from chemo and surgeries........hope that helps.......God bless you
