    Exercise to avoid lymphodema

    Has anyone out there figured out an effective way to keep your arms well exercised, so as to avoid lymphadema ? I try to do a quick 40-50 wall "push ups" each day and have found my arms don't hurt like they originally did after bilateral mastectomy--but that the so-called "exercises" given to me by a physical therapist don't seem to take the pain away. Any advice?

      Maybe that isn't what the exercises given to you by a physical therapist are intended to do. Most likely they are intended to help improve range of motion, which is different from easing pain, which is different from avoiding lymphedema.

      The PT with whom I worked told me the pain was from scar tissue. Sometimes that just won't go away, no matter how many stretches you do. The push-ups will help with the mobility, but not the scar tissue.

      It is the muscle contractions that move the lymph. I have recently been told that TaiChi is good for lymphedema if taken slowly and cautiously. I agree that scar tissue and tight fascia (the tissue connecting the skin to the muscles) can cause both pain and increased lymphedema. My naturopath has helped to treat both in me with Neurotherapy (a homepathic injected subcutaneously that reduced the scar tissue immediately) and a Frequency Specific Micro-current.

      I am finding that the push ups are helping me with mobility, pain and less of a "cording" feeling under my arm. Will talk to my regular PT about it tomorrow, but meanwhile, will continue "standing and giving you 40". Thanks for input.

      I continue to have some stiffness/tightness/numbness on my axillary excision side, but the cord (Mondor's cord?) that was originally there has gone away - maybe from years of Yoga.

      I found yoga to be extremely beneficial, also massage. Did you know that there are specialized massage therapists that do this - it is called Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). I would Google those three words together with your city name to find someone in your area that does this. It's really nice, very effective and helps immensely. Also, when you travel by air make sure to wear a compression sleeve which will help keep your arm(s) from swelling. How many lymph nodes did you lose?
