    Fatigue is my biggest issue, any suggestions to boost energy level would be appreciated.

      Staying active is what helped for me. Exercise will help rev the metabolism. It may seem like it will be hard to get going, but once you do you will gain more energy making it is easier to keep on being more active.

      Fatigue stinks, and it's hard to ever think you have energy if you compare yourself to your "old" pre-cancer self. Like Nancy said, keeping active is the key. Learning how to pace that activity is key, and knowing when to rest.

      I also have a little coffee in the morning.. if you do find a magic energy level booster, let us all know!

      Studies have shown that ginseng may help. Try a cup or two of tea a day. Keep active, but try not to over extend your emotional and physical energy, which is very difficult to do. Work with where you are in the moment. I find that meditation, massage with energy work, light walking and a weekly Pilates class - really help me keep it together. Try to get enough sleep, I nap most days. Eat clean, (little or no processed foods), light meals and snacks through the day. And keep hydrated. I drink between 16-20 glasses of liquid a day - tea (all kinds) both hot and Iced, water, and seltzer.

      I totally agree with the exercise/keeping active, hydrate and eating well. My nutritionist told me that while I was having chemo and radiation that I needed to boost my protein intake to at least 85g per day, with 120g being optimal. Protein helps your cells repair themselves. She suggested Boost plus or Ensure plus or a protein powder. I opted for the protein powder because the Boost and Ensure have HIGH carbs!

      I make a smoothie of frozen fruit (1/4 cup), juice (6 oz.), yogurt (4 oz.) and protein powder. I use a high protein (20g), low carb (2g), low calorie (52) powder from GNC. This smoothie tastes great, feels like a yummy reward, is easy to whip up in a blender and it is defiantly the energy boost that I've been looking for since I've suffered from fatigue while going through chemo. I drink at least one per day, sometimes two if I don't get enough protein in my diet, like right after a chemo treatment when nausea is a problem and I don't feel like eating much.

      Also, if dairy products upset your tummy, just leave out the yogurt. Add more juice if you want a thinner smoothie. Experiment with different fruits and juices to find your favorite flavor combos!

      You have not and probably will not get the answer to your question as no one knows exactly how you feel. Only you know how you feel. I have been looking for an answer for eleven years with four occurrences of NHL and have found that I had to figure it out each time for myself.

      It is up to you to make assessments of your condition while at home by trying to ease slowly into the activities.

      If you have not been doing any activity then you have to start! I tried staying in my recliner until I got better only to find out that made things worse. You have to build up your stamina and endurance slowly with light activity. They always say walking is enough. Naturally if your activities require heavy physical activity then you have to slowly work up to the level that is required.

      I had a desk job but still required rest periods doing the day and was allowed to do that. Everybody is different; there was one gal that ran on the beach everyday while in treatment. Another man was doing chemo and radiation on the same day. He continued working packing and moving equipment where he works to a new location.

      I talked with my nurse advocate this week and she said in her twenty-six years every person in treatment asked your question, “When will the fatigue go away?”

      I have had to evaluate my prescribed medicines as they can give side effects that give symptoms the same as the cancer treatment. I found it is better to “feel” the effect of my restless lag syndrome than to take the medicine to relive the disorder. My doctor did give me permission to discontinue prescribed medicine. This meds stole my mornings with dizziness. You might talk to your doctor about your meds.

      This week I went to a massage therapist for the first. I found I had knots on my back and on both sides of my neck. I felt them each time they were rubbed. They were being worked out. The knots are waste build up (lactic acid) in the muscles.

      I did not know the cause of my tension headaches. They are now resolved because of the massage. It did not fix everything but did help.

      This is the type of thing I have had to do to figure out what can be fixed or to search for “work arounds”on issues that cannot be fixed now but my resolve themselves in time. Or it may be something I have to add to my “new normal.”

      Thank you for helpful answers. I have always been a very active person, however lately nap seems to be my new norm. I am attending a support group to counteract the depression issues. I suppose I could do a better job of balancing as when I feel good, I overdo and am down for the count the following day. I do need to improve my diet. It does help to know others are experiencing the same issues and I am not just being a whimp :)

      Your body needs a lot of rest at this time, it will take time after treatment to feel yourself again. Listen to your body and give it the rest it needs.

      I'm tired a lot to so what I do is have a list of simple stuff to do throughout the day so I just don't sleep 24/7. It's just little stuff though like go get the mail cook dinner pick up dog toys that are everywhere lol. Just helps keep me motivated to move. :) good luck to you
