Has anyone broken their femur as a result of extensive radiation? My leg broke this past fall and is not healing because of osteo necrosis.

Has anyone had any kind of treatments to help regenerate the bone and improve their walking? I must use a cane or walker now - and would like to walk again on my own.

Also, what are you doing for pain management?

Hopegirl, Although I am not a patient, I am an oncology nurse, and I have seen the effects of radiation. My patient, and best friend was paralysed in one leg due to over-radiaton; so I can sympathize with your plight. Depending on where the osteonecrosis occurs usually determines the course of treatment. Sometimes antibiotics, debridement and curettage is recommended, and sometimes it is the use of a hyperbaric chamber that is preferred. If your rad-onc has not discussed the options with you or is not addressing it, perhaps you might ask for an ortho consult and see what would be recommended. If your pain stems from the soft tissue then you need to ask your oncologist for something that will meet your needs. If it is pain from the bone, opioids will not work on bone pain; Ibuprofen does. Either way, you need to consult your oncologist or get a pain management consult that your oncologist would recommend. I wish you the best of luck, Carm.
