Has anyone had a glossectomy? I am scared to death that I will never be able to talk again.

Has anyone had a glossectomy? I am scared to death that I will never be able to talk again.
They say that only a portion of my tongue will have to be removed, but there is no way to know how much and how bad it will affect my speech. Can you talk after having your surgery? Did you have to have speech therapy?

I knew a man who had half of his tongue removed. They replaced it with tissue from his leg. He talked quite well.

I've read what those who've had partial glossectomies have said after their surgery. They all were able to talk, although some of them had to have speech therapy. I hope that your surgery goes as your surgeon expects (or even better). Sending you my best wishes -

Wow, I had no idea that could be done, the leg tissue. NeckCancer, I wish you well, I had a malignant tonsil, but the worst I've had is radical neck dissection and radiation damage to my throat.

Greg, it was back in the early 90s. He used to come talk to us in the smokers area... his tongue grew hair where the leg tissue was ... that has always turned my stomach, but hey, he was alive and well!!

ohh come on now LiveWithCancer I'm glad he was able to talk and I wish NeckCancer the best and will be praying for gods healing ,,,But it grew hair??? I'm glad he is alive and well but how do you not get the giggles saying his tongue needs a shave..? not trying to be rude or mean just trying to keep a straight face saying 'hair on the tongue' which doctor takes care of that?...still taking a bath by myself biga17133

Haha, biga17133, it surely made an impression on me!! I don't know if he was pulling my leg ... he was a jokester. And i am naive, especially back then.

Ask to speak with other patients upon whom the surgeon has operated. Offer your phone number or get theirs.
Best wishes
