Hello everybody. Does anyone know how long it should take to get PET scan results back?

I had my PET scan 2 weeks ago to see if I am clear or still sick and no results yet. I called 4 times during that time and got the same answer each time. No results and no idea when I would get the results. Can you please tell me how long it usually takes to get your results. Thank you

The time depends on the size of the facility, or more important, the level of technology at the facility. Where I go to at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, I can have the PET at 8 AM, have a 10 Am appointment with my Oncologist, and he will pull up the scan on a computer in the exam room and tell me a basic good or not answer. The scan hasn't been read by a Radiologist at that point, but the Dr. knows enough of what to look for to give me an answer. Then they tell me that if anything comes back other than what they thought, they will call me.

I can also go online and get the results when the Radiologist reads it and posts his findings. That is usually in less than a week.

Another place I have been to is much slower though. So, it just depends on your facility.

Wishing clean scans and happy times for you!

Nitronick, Generally a PET is supposed to be read within 24 hours. If your doctor wants to know sooner he can ask for a "Wet Read" which is the radiologist interpreting the film on the phone before the hard copy report is generated. If I were you, I would go to the medical records department of the facility you had the PET done and ask for a copy of the report. It is a part of your medical records and you have a right to the report. They will probably charge you the cost of generating a copy. You could call the department and let them know you want a copy of the PET you had done on that date and that you will be by today to pick it up. Most patients that I work with get their copies that way. Best of luck, Carm.

You should definitely speak with your oncologist or the radiology department again. I had my PET scan in the morning and saw my oncologist later that afternoon and the results were already in the system and finished. Surely 2 weeks is plenty of time to read the scans. Best of luck to you.

It is VERY unusual to need to wait so long for results.

Perhaps you could "nudge" your oncologist?

My pet scans come back in less than a day and my dr. calls right away. She's got alot of pull. If I have a same day doctor visit, the scan will be ready by my appt.
