Help please. I have questions regarding insurance.

I am currently on short term disability through the state of California. I am insured through COBRA. From my understanding, COBRA ends after 18 months. What are my options for insurance coverage after that? HIPAA? MEDICAL? All the uncertainty that this disease brings on is sometimes a lot to take in and deal with. I'm trying to educate myself as much as possible so I can face all this with a plan. If anyone out there has had experience dealing with trying to maintain insurance coverage through this journey....I would really like to hear how you dealt with all this. Thanks in advance everyone.

I don't know about continuing insurance I'm starting out with no insurance. You could try looking at the PCIP (preexsisting condition insurance) through CA (depending on the state some go through the federal coverage, and some offer it themselves). Because you're on short term disability through CA, maybe you'll qualify for disability medicaid, I don't know if I qualify yet, but the financial assistance people at my hospital helped me apply, now we're just waiting to hear. Also, does the disability program with CA have any insurance options that you qualify for with it? Good luck, I hope this helps. I'm sure someone will be along who knows about other options as well.

9/18/12- Thanks ladies for your answers. I had too many questions and not enough answers. I ended up calling the American Cancer Society and told them I needed insurance info. I spoke with one of their insurance specialists, the lovely Adriana, and she was kind enough to go over a lot of info with me. I fount out a lot of info I had assumed was incorrect. I was stressing out over it but better to find out. Fortunately I have options so that was good news. :)
