• Herceptin monthly vs. weekly?

    Herceptin monthly vs. weekly?

I'm currently in chemo and will be through mid-March. I get the full chemo (TCH) every three weeks plus just the herceptin infusion on the intervening weeks. Once the full chemo is finished, I will need to continue just the herceptin, but I'm told I will then have the option of continuing it weekly or getting a larger dose once a month. I am not having any side effects from the herceptin when getting it by itself on the intervening weeks.

I'm wondering if anybody else has switched from weekly to monthly larger infusions of herceptin and if you experienced any side effects when getting the larger but less frequent dose.

      Hi Nancy:
I get herceptin every 21 days with my other chemos I have not had a problem with it. I have also had it by itself and no problems. I think if you haven't had a problem with it you wont.
      Good Luck

My husband will be getting herceptin plus taxol weekly, 3 on 1 off. The doctor says this is because he's had a bad reaction to chemo in the past, so this way is gentler and allows them to spread out the dose.

Nancyjac, I had the same regimen you are getting. I am still receiving the Herceptin every 3 weeks. The infusion time jumps from 30 minutes to 90 minutes, but that is the only change. I don't have any side effects and I now have 2 weeks without any chemo! The Herceptin must be given for 52 weeks, so getting it weekly is a lot of time and needle sticks (unless you have a port).

Thanks all. Very glad to hear that. Sounds like the monthly is the way to go once I finish the other chemo.

Hey Nancyjac... I went through this (still ) my Herceptin and have been put on hold for the moment, was supposed to be finished February 24th, but my mugga scan has shown my left ventrical of my heart was inflamed and a non regular heart beat. Just make sure your heart is being watched through out your Herceptin treatment... Can't decide if I even want to finish my final 4 because of this ????

I had a mugga scan before I started the herceptin and all was good. Did you have one before you started that was normal and now it's not? Was the inflamation caused by the herceptin or could it have been from something else?
