How long can you go between port flushes?

I read on here a while back someone had a port for years after treatment was over. Can you keep them that long without flushing? Won't they stop working?

I have found that the time varies depending on who you're talking to at the treatment center. I've bee told anywhere from 3 weeks to every 6 weeks. If you have the purple power port (which is what I had) then they recommend every 4 weeks.

That may have been me, having one for years. I kept mine for 15 years, without flushing. It probably wouldn't worked, but I wouldn't let them have it, I liked it so much. Then, two years after letting it go, I was diagnosed again. Didn't have to have chemo though this time. They did tell me to have it flushed once a month.

I gewt a port flush every 6 weeks per my Oncologist. I have gone as long as 6 months between flushes and it flushed fine and in some cases they had to TPM it to get it to work after only a week while I was on chemo. Everyone is a little different in that respect so you sort of need to find out what works best for you and how often the Drs test yuour blood. Bet you never knew your blood had to keep studying for tests all of the time?

I've had my port since June 2010. They want to flush it every 6 weeks. Once I forgot and it was almost 3 months. Everything was fine. Now, we schedule the next appt. every time I come in.

Hi HardyGirl, I am instructed to have it flushed every 4-6 weeks. The oncology nurse suggested the 5 week mark at most. I have the purple power port.
