How long does it typically take to find a stem cell match?

Mother needs to travel to Stanford from Hawaii since our state does not perform stem cell transplants.

I was diagnosed in January of 2011, and then my transplant was in May of 2011. It was a few weeks to test siblings, about a month to find a match, few weeks for my tests and insurance approval then about another month for the doner test and donation, I was in the hospital about a week before transplant.

As soon as we knew I need a BMT (Sept 2008) my siblings went to get tested right away. My insurance paid for this btw. Luckily, my sister was a perfect match.....my brother 9 out of 10. I had my 1st BMT in early Feb. 2009. There were some complications due to the fact that my Oncologist wanted her to donate at our location rather than hers. So within I'd say 2 weeks (after negotiating flights, childcare, etc.) she was on her way. Not to depress you even more, but my AML came back within 6 weeks of the transplant. My sis came back again to donate, and this time they gave me ONLY her mature white cells (separated them out). That did the trick! Hope you find a match soon!
