    HPV Vaccine

Hey Everyone, what's your opinion on the HPV Vaccine? I have an 11 year old daughter and I'm not sure if I should get her the shot or not. If it does in fact protect you against certain types of cancer, it almost seems like a no-brainer. Thought?

I read recently that HPV is one of the possible causative factors in colon cancer as well as cervical. Why WOULDN'T you vaccinate against it?

Boys as well as girls need to be protected.

As a recently retired pediatric nurse practitioner I urge you to get your daughter protected (and any sons you may have also once they reach 11 years old). I cannot tell you how many times moms asked to "put off" the HPV series until their daughters were older and then it was too late because the young ladies were already sexually active. One young woman contracted the virus in her throat due to oral sex "so I wouldn't get pregnant"... I have heard every excuse and encourage you to protect your child. Good luck.
