I am having a mastectomy and a latissimus muscle flap reconstruction on Aug 1st. Please let me know if anyone out there has had this done.

Would like to know the pros and cons of this type of reconstruction and how mobile I am likely to be after.

Hi Oskygirl. I had a mastectomy and lat flap reconstruction on Jan 17, 2012. It's been almost 6 months and I'm doing great and do not experience any pain yet I often do experience some discomfort. I think it took me about 2 months after the surgery to feel okay and not be in that much pain although the weekly tissue expander treatments were somewhat painful but not all the time.

One thing I'm not crazy about is the thickness of the muscle that is removed from the back and pulled around my side to my front and used for the reconstruction. I also do not like how my reconstructed breast is now a "muscle" and acts like one and expands and tightens as a muscle.

I also had 7 lymph nodes removed so I have other issues with my arm from that surgery but overall, I'm pleased with my reconstruction although it's not completed yet.

Thanks fineover40. It seems there aren't many people who have had this type of procedure so not too many comments. How painful was the incision on your back and how big of a scar do you have?

yeah I agree, not many people have this type of surgery. My back incision is about 4 inches long but was not extremely painful although I had to make sure no one hugged me too hard for many months because that would cause extreme pain. Now it's okay to give me big hugs ;)

My plastic surgeon did a great reconstruction job. I'm sure everything will be okay for you. Feel free to ask me anything else you may want to know. Yvonne

I had a double masectomy dec 2011, problems with necrosis had surgey again in Feb, continued with healing problems and had to have latissimus dorsi flap with expanders put in in April. I still have expanders in and will have exchange surgery in DECEMBER. I had large flaps done, my scars on back are over ten inches each, my breast flaps are 9 x 4 inches, so larger then most. I had my last fill in August and have to wait four months to make sure skin will be ok after exchange surgery. I had previous radiation on chest area with Hodgkins so that's why my skin would not heal. My dr wanted to do lat flap originally but I wanted to try normal bi lat masectomy, oh well he was right. Tough surgery to recover from, I will have had my expanders in for over a year far too long and very uncomfortable to live with so can't wait for Xmas present! Hope everything with you is going well.
