Hi Donna!!
I would be willing to talk to you on the latissmus flad. I started having mine done in 2009. I just had to have more work done on Jan 3 of this year. I am not trying to discourage you, but I really wished I would have known then what I know now and I would have never have had it done. I live in pain with my back and left arm since I had it done. I you want to ask more questions, or talk further on more please feel free to get with me.

I am scheduled for Latissmus flap reconstruction on 4/9/12. I would love to be in touch with someone. The above experiences are concerning.

On January 20 I had double skin sparing mastectomies with immediate reconstruction using the Lat flap. Seven weeks later I still have excruciating back pain. I have scoliosis and I've asked my doctor if it could be creating the issues with my back. He says no. I'm very discouraged.

Brandy, have you been given a reason for your back pain? Are you taking medication or receiving PT?

Geriff, there are many women who are pleased with this procedure. Our comments are the exception, not the rule.

I know there are several women who have had the proceedure and have been pleased. I talked with a plastic surgeon about having it done. Also doing the abd flalp. His comments were I would not be pleased with them as I am a runner and need a strong core. Each one would hinder the core. When you rob peter to pay for paul there are some down sides. I have heard of other women who have chronic back pain with this proceedure. Maybe there are excercises you can do to strengthen the weakened area.

I had the latissimus flap reconstruction about six weeks ago. The masectomy incisions have given me little pain, however, the incision on my back has given me significant pain. I can't say I have untolerable pain in my back, more a stiffness. I do exercises every morning and it has gotten some better. I am hoping after time passes, the stiffness will go away. The incision has healed nicely. Hopefully you are doing better now. If you have any further questions or just want to talk you can contact me directly at [email redacted].

Donnaakins,
Thank you for reaching out to other WhatNexters. This is what we're all about! I hope all is well.
Your question reminded me of some content we have on reconstruction experiences.

It also reminded me to let WhatNexters know about our Beginner's Guide to Cancer, including a guide on how women chose between a lumpectomy and mastectomy.
