I had a Power Port installed this past Friday and have bloodwork and chemo tomorrow. Will I be able to use the EMLA cream in the morning?

I wasn't sure if 4 days after surgery was too early to use the cream.

I had my port inserted just before my first chemo so don't remember what they used...but I used it after that...maybe even a couple days later when I went for IV hydrations....I'm guessing it is okay to use...but maybe call the clinic before you go...wishing you and easy time with your first chemo

I had my port inserted a week before my first chemo and used the cream for my first chemo. Then I found out I am allergic to the cream, so instead of numbing the port area, it made it red and itchy. I really had no pain when my port is accessed so I never needed the cream anyhow.

Can you call your office before you go in to find out? I don't remember if I could use the Emla for the first cycle, which was also a Monday, following a Friday port insertion. While Emla is wonderful, getting the needle in the port without it is not bad. It's just better if you don't feel it at all.

I wish I could call before I go, but my appointment is 7:40 and we have to leave home at 5:30 am to get there by 7:40. I guess I will put the cream on....

Having the port accessed without the cream is not painful either. I never found the cream made much difference. If you do use it, be careful not to get it on your new incision.

I did not find the cream to be that helpful. In fact, I understand that the Center where I went is not even prescribing it any more. Accessing the port is swift and usually not that uncomfortable. I wish you the best.

I also have the power port. I never used the cream and they just told me to take a deep breath and it was in. It is a little more painful since I have not had chemo is over six months but nothing I cannot tolerate. Not any worse than looking for a vein that rolls.

yes, just put it on at least 1/2 hour before it is accessed and cover with a band aide

I never needed the cream; it really didn't hurt at all when they accessed my port.
