Hello, I am an oncology nurse and that is a common side effect of I -131 treatment. It does affect the salivary glands and the tastebuds. This could take up to 6 months to come back but your taste buds will return and the lumps should dissipate. If you can get a box of lemon drops, this might help. Lemon always causes salivation so it kind of exercises the glands and usually the more acidic things are the first taste to return. Good luck, Carm.

When I took I-131 treatments, I was told to drink lots of liquid and to suck on sour candy to keep the salivary glands active. I did lose taste for any food or drink for quite a while, several weeks up to a couple of months. My taste did come back eventually, but it took a while. Good luck, I will pray for you.

I feel obligated to contradict the last 2 posts. Check with your doctor and with your dentist. Studies are now showing that the sour candies do not really help and acid will do more damage to your teeth than good. Drink lots of water.. when you think you have drank enough drink some more. Gently massage your glands and use warm compresses. Another reason not to add the acid affect to your teeth is the RAI is know to do dental damage.

Sounds like you are on track with RAI131. Just did RAI131 on Sept 7. Not fun! I had Tall cell thyroid cancer and 17 lymph nodes. I am a 45 year mom and wife. It takes a while for the taste buds to come back. I found the best thing to do was listen to body sleep when I was tired exercise when I could and eat healthy. you have been through a lot!!! be kind to yourself. My body scan after RAI came out clear of cancer so it is a small price to pay for a excellent result. Let me know if i can help. be well, sheree
