Usually one of the first things that is done is to check you out completely to make sure it has not spread to other parts of your body. they have to know what they are dealing with before starting your treatment. Sometimes a Pet Scan is done. Great tool to stage your cancer with, it will show up on the screen a red color where your cancer has spread to. They found a spot in my colon that wouldnt have been found otherwise. Good luck to you!

Pet scan is partly how they found mine. Before the surgeon would do surgery, I had to have an ultrasound of my lymph nodes. I also had several biopsied that looked suspicious. Luckily it had not spread. This makes a big difference in the type of surgery. Just a total thyroidectomy compared to radical tt which includes removing lymph nodes.
