If I get a port how long do I have to keep it in?

The doctor's office said, "as long as I want, but shouldn't be too long after treatment is over". What, why?

I got my port in 2013. It was used every two weeks for treatment for 4 years or so ... I can't remember exactly ... and then I went to monthly treatments. My last treatment was in April 2019. We all presume that I will one day have to return to treatments so no one has suggested that I do away with the port at this time. It is a pain to get it flushed, but otherwise, I am glad I have it (even though I do hate that it feels like it screams "she has cancer!" if I wear something where it can be seen, which I very rarely do.)

The flushing is no big deal. I had mine flushed every six weeks. They just inject into the port some saline fluid in a syringe to make sure it's still working. It takes just a couple of minutes.

Flushing is only a big deal if you have to drive for an hour each way to have it done ... and then wait for awhile for your turn in the chair. The actual process of the flush is exactly as cllinda says - easy peasy. I hate having it done because of the time it takes out of my day, not because there is anything difficult about it.
