As with any cancer treatment, treatment, dosage, and duration are specific to the patient. There is no standard one size fits all.

Sugarbear, what you describe is exactly the IL-2 regimen I had. After completing the second week of in hospital treatment, I waited six weeks before I was scanned to see if there was any benefit. Sadly for me, there was none. If there is response to the first treatment cycle, there would be a second. IL-2 is not easy to go through but for those for whom it is effective, response could be long lasting. Best of luck to you.

Hello Sugarbear, I had 5 - 5 day treatments of IL-2 AS a part of my bio chemotherapy treatments. I have heard of people having 57 treatments! All melanomas are not the same and it, unfortunately, depends on you and how your body reacts. Take Care! Steph

I had two rounds of IL-2, with several weeks between them. It's harsh stuff with grueling side effects, but I had mine over 4 years ago, and I'm still alive in spite of Stage IV melanoma. I also had radiation close to the time I had the IL-2, and my doctors think that combination (radiation and IL-2) was helpful. I wrote about it in my book, Melanoma Mama: On Life, Death, and Tent Camping available on Amazon or through my website, melanomamama.com Constance Emerson Crooker

You get up to 14 bags of IL-2, one bag every 8 hrs. as you are able to tolerate it. Most don't take that many doses. I made it up to 13 before my kidneys shut down and I started to bleed from my kidneys. My platelet count dropped very low and they were debating a transfusion. My heart also started having terrible arrythmias so they cut me off at 13. I did 10 bags 10 days later for a total of 23 out of 28.

They have strict criteria as to witholding doses or stopping all together. Prior to each dose labs are drawn and you are reevaluated to see if the dose is held or you stop period. You get an average of 10 days rest inbetween the first and second round. After that you are usually scanned 4-6 weeks later. If you respond partially you are offered a second cycle 6-12 weeks later. If you are a complete responder you may or may not be offered a second round, no response and usually they don't repeat.

You are in ICU as long as you need to be. Some get kicked out the next day, I usually stayed in there for 1-3 days, then went to the oncology floor for another couple of days. They pushed me hard and it took time for me to stabilize after the very last bag.

Very few people go through 3 cycles.
