Yes. They are helpful for general immune system support and digestive issues.

I'm curious about this, too. Looks like foods with live cultures like yogurt. I don't want to take supplements, just be sure to eat real food with probiotics.

The only time we use probiotics is when dad is on antibiotics or going into the hospital as a preventive for antibiotic-associated diarrhea. I would use it any time that there's a possibility that healthy intestinal bacteria may be killed off. I have done quite a bit of reading on this for a previous illness, and I usually buy a probiotic blend sold under the brand PB-8 by Nutrition Now that so far has never let us down. You can also get that in a vegetarian capsule if you prefer. I find that the blends of different bacteria work better.

I've been taking probiotics for some time. One of the answers below points out that getting a probiotic that has many different strains is best, and this is important. Also, there are beginning to be many research studies that show that the mix of flora in our guts has a strong effect on our general health.

I assume that since chemotherapy kills so many cells, it can't be doing anything good for the mix of gut flora. So my advice is to jump in, but pick one with high counts and a large number of different strains. There are many brands, but don't get a probiotic with just one or two strains.

Also, yogurt is quite healthy, especially if you don't go wild with the high-carb varieties, but it doesn't have a variety of strains. So it's good, but probably not enough. I like Align brand, but it's expensive. Sometimes there are nice coupons in the paper for it, and if you can combine a coupon with a sale, it helps bring the price down. Still expensive, though. All the vitamin shops have different brands. You can always ask a store employee to tell you what is good and why.
