    Is it normal for your team to cancel your radiation therapy 15 minutes before your first chemo treatment is finished??

    I was trippin' right along just about finished with my first Chemo treatment, 15 minutes before the last drip fell, my radiation was cancelled and put off by 5 days.The only thing that I can think of, is that they didn't feel I was quite ready to start radiation or my Radiation doc wants to wait the usual 3 to 5 day gateway for side effects/symptoms to kick in. I DO know my Oncologist and her team was pretty surprised to see that in the 6 days since I was first seen I dropped from 114.5 to 98.3 lbs. Could this have anything to do with it? I mean really, can a one just be TOO skinny to take radiation? When I asked my Chemo RN why it was rescheduled, she said "Truthfully, I didn't think to ask." Wow, didn't she think that I'd NOT be interested in something like this?
    The first Chemo treatment went pretty smooth, considering what they were actually doing to me. I did wake up at 1:39 a.m. with one of the worst headaches I've had since my days of weekend party crashin'. WOW!!!?

      First congratulations on making it through the first chemo treatment. There could be a number of reasons for the cancellation. My experience with radiation says it might be that the machine broke, as on a number of days my radiation was delayed due to malfunctions. They also like to schedule full days to get the most out of expensive machines, which may explain why they did not reschedule you sooner. The only way to know the real reason is to ask which is what I recoomend you do. Good luck with the rest of your treatments.

      Glad to hear the the first chemo went as well as it did. I suppose a "hangover" isn't the worst of side effects. :-)

      They pulled a similar stunt on me when I went in for my second chemo. I was waiting in the recliner when the nurse came up and said they wouldn't treat me that day. It seems that my white blood cells were too low after the first treatment and they didn't want to risk another.

      You probably should ask your doctor what happened. Maybe there was a medical reason, maybe they had some other reason.

      Why not call the radiation center and/or your oncologist to find out why. I had radiation for my breast while on oral chemo for my kidney cancer, and was on the meds for almost a year at that point. Both treatments have side effects, perhaps they decided that it was best to see what you would get from chemo - that first drip is a dozy, and i had most worst reaction to it, before starting another treatment. This way should any issues turn up they can have a better idea of what might be causing them. Good luck.

      During both of my treatments with Radiation, 24 yrs ago, and then 4 years ago, it happened a couple times. It was usually the equipment had an issue of some sort. I've also had Pet scans cancelled because of "issues" with it also.

      It would just be nice if they would call and let you know all the time, sometimes you show up and get told to go home. That's not good.

      Hey Brian, me again. I have no chemo experience, but I did go through 33 rounds of radiation once the initial surgery had mostly healed. This is where your self-advocacy thing comes up (or that of a spouse/loved one/friend who has stepped up to the plate)......ASK THE RADIOLOGY FOLKS WHY IT WAS CANCELLED. It is your body, your disease, your treatment, you have a right to know why it was cancelled. Period. They have no valid excuse for not honestly answering that question. If the first person you get on the phone won't/can't explain, insist on their supervisor talking to you. About the time I get put off by the 2nd person, I ask for the name of the chief of that department, and a DIRECT phone number to him/her. I'd even know it in advance (from the internet). Drop the name first if you must. Don't be surprised if suddenly they spill their guts (rather than have you call the department head).

      YOU are the customer AND the patient; stand up for your right to know everything in the reporters creed: who, what, where, when, how and why about EVERYTHING in your treatment.

      Even if confrontation goes against your grain, your survival and satisfaction with the treatment process depends on your confronting those who try to limit your access to your information. That said, Peroll is correct, they try to make full schedule days with no overtime, and equipment can fail or personnel call out sick; but this isn't just a test, this is THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT, and they need to answer the question and get it started pronto. Make them answer you. It may be the guidelines as Harry says, but you won't know if you don't make them tell you.
      No need to be a pitbull, but be confrontational with a smile and a refusal to get shined on with stalling answers. All any patient really wants is the truth.
