The House of the Rising sun by the Animals. I like escape songs. It makes me feel that I'm not alone and others can have it worse.

My fav-writer-singer is Tommy James and the Shondelles. He wrote and produced some of his music--He lived in the Rust belt. He was working in an electronics store and an agent called him up and asked why he didn't do concerts. Tommy asked why--- He didn't know that he was and had been in the top 5 in the Tri-State area. He said that he'd do a concert and contacted his surprised band members.

I hope that we all can be surprised in our lives like this. And that is real R&R.

My theme song is So What by Pink... because:

And I'm gonna wear it tonight
      I'm gonna get in trouble
      I wanna start a fight!"

I'm not a big Bon Jovi fan, but Livin' on a Prayer had a tremendous impact on me when I was going through treatment, especially when when I was half-way there. But the best one is, "It's my Life, it's now or never. I ain't going to live forever, I just want to live while I'm alive." Whenever either of those songs come on the radio, I crank up the volume, dance and sing as loudly as I can.

Happy from Pharrell Williams. My mom passed away just few weeks ago (April 4th). She fought to the end. Every time I would take her to get chemo that song "Happy" would always play on the radio. It reminds me of her so much. I miss her but I know that where she is now, she is Happy. I share that with you.

"Because He Lives" by Bill and Gloria Gaither…
      Because He lives,
      I can face tomorrow
      Because He lives,
      All fear is gone.
I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living
      Just because He lives!

I listen to music all the time, and many songs have lifted my spirits and soothed my heart. There were days that music was all I had the strength and energy for! Now, if I could just carry a tune in a bucket...

Unchained melody-- you know-the song that when darkness comes I will love you-- I go to a small oncology radiation clinic. They have a kitchen to feed the poor patients-those that really don't have a care taker-those that are just losing too much weight during treatment..

The radiology clinic connected with me through a routine referral by the biopsy surgeon that removed part of my nose and lip-she was supposed to refer me to everyone and did so. By that time I had a bad reputation as a bad-possibly violent mental case. Radiology looked at all of the paperwork that I got by myself-the biopsy reports, surgical records, even my lab work. I had to go to my PCP and say-It's my birthday--I need the necessary lab work for an oncology surgery patient. He said that oncology did that not him. I told him that the oncologist didn't order anything, and the federal law-and HMO rules says that I can have a mammogram, physical, GYN, colonoscopy-but I only want and need lab work. If you don't order the correct lab work-I will file complaints with the HMO, the state, and Medicare.

The radiology director looked at all of my paperwork-He said- you aren't crazy at all- and he's been like a father-a son- the nurses hug me. At times, other patients would start talking about how they felt safe there.

I Feel Good, Like I Knew That I Would
      Get on the Good Foot

Then some Bootsy Collins', Stretchin' Out in a Rubber Band

Followed by some XXX jarring P-Funk Parliament with George Collins, Maceo Parker (horns) and more Bootsy Collins bumping that funky bass with Tear the Roof Off the Sucker Medley and
      Swing Down Sweet Chariot

(If I die before you do, you're invited to my memorial to help tear the roof off the sucker. No syrupy organ music or lilies allowed! Only soulful music guaranteed to make a dead woman dance up a sweat.)

There's a song I often listen to on You Tube. When the great Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti sings Nessun Dorma, from Puccini's opera, Turandot, it makes my heart soar when he reaches the climax of the song and repeats the word, "Vincero," meaning both "I will win," and in the context of the story, "I will survive." It feels like an intravenous injection of pure courage.

Here are two favorites: Beautiful as sung by Carol King acoutically when she was young. And, Learn to Live Without sung by Idina Menzel in the show If/Then. One reminds me that we are all beautiful, no matter the surgeries and radiation changes. The other reminds me that we all have some losses in our lives, but have the fortitude to go on and live as best as we can. For ourselves and others.

Sorry for the typo. Should be "acoustically." And, I have had five surgeries plus radiation. No chemo. The surgical suites and radiation oncology facilities are just as frightening and simultaneously comforting, as infusion rooms. The treatments are for our good, yet so difficult to endure. We are all strong and courageous in our own ways.
