Looking for information on interleukin 2 treatments.

I am meeting with a new (to me) cancer team at Beth Israel in Boston on Tuesday to talk about options for treating my stage 4 renal cell cancer and IL2 is one of the treatment we will be talking about. Just curious on others that have had the treatment and what issues or successes they have had.

I had 4 rounds of IL2 in the hospital - about 6 days each time, once a month, 3 times a day. You have a whole set of doctors check you out before you start and they check in each day. There have been some wonderful results with this treatment. I had it almost 2 years ago. I have melanoma. There are side effects when you get the treatment, but the nurses are there immediately to alleviate them. The doctors will explain the side effects and what they use to treat them. One of the side effects is that you gain a lot of weight. The doctors had told me that, but it was a surprise how much I gained. Once you stop the treatments you usually take water pills and the weight disappears quickly. You are beat, but start to feel much better quickly. I usually went to sleep after treatment and when I woke up I was better and, most times, able to eat. It is not easy but, as I said, there have been good results. If your doctors feel you are strong enough to have it and recommend it, I would do it. I would do it again myself.

didn't qualify for this, the Doctors basically explained it this way.

"if you were in great shape maybe but because of your heart (I have AFIB) you probably would not survive the first treatment'" They got no argument from me......

The good news for me was they do have alternative meds and treatments for clear cell metastasized renal cell cancer and I start on one of them next week.

After surgery to remove my left kidney, I started IL2. I was on the last day of my first round and went into heart failure. The Dr's would not let me continue with this treatment. I did have 7 months of stable (no growth) after the 5 days of IL2. I wish I could have gone further as it is the only possible cure.

I have just started Sutant. Am in my second round. Will not have a CT until March to see if it is shrinking my tumors.

They are very careful and watch you like a hawk when you are on IL2. Good Luck

IL2 SAVED MY LIFE. IF YOU CAN DO IT (YOUR DRS. WILL QUALIFY YOU) YES, GO FOR IT. IT IS WORTH IT. I TOOK THE TREATMENTS FOR 5 DAYS EVERY 8 HR. WENT HOME FOR 2 WEEKS WENT BACK 2 MORE TIMES. IT ISN'T EASY BUT YOU FORGET ABOUT THE BAD PARTS REAL SOON-- AS SOON AS YOU GET THE GOOD NEWS THAT IT'S GONE!!!
