    Low RBC and Platelets

My wife's chemo treatments killed the cancer but now her bone marrow either won't produce enough red blood cells and platelets which is life threatening. She has had two transfusions so far. Her next appointment will check this problem again. She was already hospitalized once. Please tell me if anyone can give me information on this.

Thanks for responding. She did receive Neulasta during her chemo last year. When can she expect to recover from this? The cancer Dr. has increased her intake of predisone from 60 mg to 120 today. The complication is her diabetes which spikes and I have to give her insulin shots. I will ask the Dr. for encouragement for she is very down due to another horrible development.

Our blood counts, particularly in the leukemia/lymphoma world, are often a roller coaster. Doctor is not alarmed at any one particular reading, but is watching the trend in blood numbers, as that tells much more. Sometimes, our marrow acts like the ocean, with "tides" coming in and going out. Transfusions are a way of life for some, a bridge for others. Since each of us responds differently, there is no way to predict marrow recovery. The spike in blood sugar, while lamentable, is often part of the game.
