    lung cancer and tarceva pill

Has anyone used the pill tarceva? My mom has stage 4 lung cancer and has tried everything except this pill. The doctor is telling her that she only as 2-3 months to live and that she should just make herself comfortable. We are still wondering if we should try this last option? ANy help would be so welcome. THanks

Tarceva typically helps people with an EGFR mutation. If your mom has this mutation she may live for a long time with stable disease if she responds to Tarceva. When you say everything what does this mean? There are some people who respond to Tarceva who are not EGFR but they have a shorter response time.

      Here are some suggestions

Is she at a top name cancer facility and does she have an expert treating her.
Has she been mutation tested..go to "lets test now to learn more" on the web

Has she had a second opinion done? Go to the Bonnies J. Addario site and watch all of the webinars in the library or got to cancer grace and read that material.

There are many clinical trials , targeted therapies and other options. Tell me how I can help you after you read this material and I will do my best to try.

I'm with CAS1 get a 2nd opinion. I have heard really good stuff about Tarceva, and it may be the right course of treatment. Getting a 2nd pair of eyes and experience to review diagnosis treatment and prognosis is always a good idea.

I am attaching information on Tarceva. I am an oncology/end of life nurse and if you have any questions for me, I am always here to help. It is never easy to come to that decision and there are many variables to consider. I am sure your mom is in capable hands with children who love and cherish her. Best of luck to you, Carm RN.

It is doubtful your Mom has tried everything.

How can you possibly know that this pill is her last option?

There are always other ways to skin the proverbial cat ... horrid practice, yes?

I also have stage iv lung cancer. I took tarceva for 1 week and was really sick. I vomited and had constant diarrhea. They cut my dosage from 7 days a week to just 3 days a week. That didn't work any better. after 1 month they switched me to something else. Now I'm losing my hair and just found out the tumors are growing. I wish your mother good luck. I will pray for your family.

My dad's girlfriend takes Tarceva and it worked for her the first day she started it. It can cause tiredness and running to the bathroom, but other than that, it works well for her. Shes stage 4 and you would never know she has non small cell squamous lung cancer. Her oncologist is very hopeful for the future.
