    Lymph nodes don't grow back!

I never knew until now that lymph nodes don't grow back. I have had lymphedema in my breast, chest and underarm and finally went to a physical therapist for treatment to help with the swelling and fibrosis. I could never understand why I would get lymphedema when I only had a lumpectomy and only 2 lymph nodes removed. The physical therapist told me that whole breast radiation (which I had) destroys the lymph nodes and systems in the breast and that the lymph nodes don't grow back! I was surprised that no one had ever told me this before. Am I the only one who didn't know this? Any one else ever been told this? It explains a lot!

Never told this, but never thought to ask....I had axillary dissection with the first layer of nodes removed as well as radiation....so far no LE, but I know it can occur anytime....

Hello, I am an oncology nurse so maybe I can shed a bit of light for you. Lymph nodes are considered the secondary lymph system along with the spleen and other organs involved. The primary lymph system is the vascular system. When a lymph is removed, fluid will "third space" until it can be re-routed to another node. Once it is in another node it is purified and then sent to the thoracic duct to be reintroduced into the vascular system. The body is a work of evolution in that it will learn to adapt and overcome a deficit. Best of luck to you, Carm RN.

If you take a look at the inform posted about Lymphoseek you will see why its such a great breakthrough for cancer. So many people have hundreds of Lymp nodes removed that don't conain any cancer cells and other don't have enough removed and the cancer returns.

We have thousands of Lymph nodes in the body..Have you asked your Dr. about any of the home equiomwnt for swelling like the sleeves? Hope it all helps you.
