    mild emphysema

BTW - I had my rad onc appointment yesterday and got a first hand look at my CT scan. It shows mild emphysema on one of my lungs. I have had a cigarette or two in the past here and there, never addicted (haven't had one in at least 10 years). No one brought this up to me... should I be concerned? My lung function is always between 98% and 100% when they measure it... thanks.

I think you should talk with your doctor about your past habits......but I also think that smoking is not good at all so if it is possible just stopp it right now......you will feel much better especially if you start exercising and having a healthy life... Maybe it is already your case, so talk with your doctor and he will be able to show you how to improve your breath capacity (if possible). Another suggestion is to ask him about yoga and if it could help you as there are lot of focus on breathing during yoga practice..... God bless you and keep fighthing

Emphysema can be caused by many things besides smoking. Remember the words "Don't Panic". We tend to go directly to the worst case possible on everything after a cancer diagnosis. With a 98 - 100 % lung function you probably do not have a problem but it is best to ask your doctors since it is on your mind. My husband has never smoked but he has asthma so his lung function is nowhere near as good. You stopped smoking 10 years ago, that is the key point. Always ask if there is something that concerns you but know that we jump to the worst case - always. Tracy

I have asthma and have never smoked; however, that being said I lived around second hand smoke for a great part of my life. My parents smoked, my brother smoked, my in-laws smoked, the people I worked with smoked and smoking was allowed in restaurants. My lung function is good; however, smells, heat and cold will bring on an attack. Radiation should be OK, talk to your physicians and see what they say. I had lung function tests every three months and I am not any worse now than when I started. You are a survivor HearMeRoar and this is such a small glitch in the big scheme of things! Hugs for you and prayers too!
