My lung cancer has shrunk to almost nothing. Am I cured? Or does it often come back?

My last PET scan, the doctor said the tumors have shrunk to almost nothing and the metabolic activity has gone from 8-12 down to 1 1/2-2 1/2. They don't know if the activity is from residual radiation or the cancer.

This is a bit like apples and oranges. A PET scan doesn't measure tumor size, just metabolic activity. Tumor size isn't really relevant other than as a representation of the cancer cells it may or may not contain. If an Xray shows no tumor or a biopsy of the tumor shows no cancerous cells, then you would be in full remission or with NED (no evidence of disease). Even in those circumstances, cancer can recur.
