    New here

Hello everyone! New to this site... I was diagnosed with appendiceal cancer a few months ago. Currently on chemo, will be having debulking/hipec soon. Any information on this surgery would be greatly appreciated

Welcome, Sylvc56! I have a rare cancer also, so I have to depend on my doctors for medical information, and come here for generic cancer questions not specific to one cancer, such as workplace and disability questions. Best wishes with your surgery.

@abrub is one of our members that had appendix cancer, click on her username and take a look at her homepage, she might be able to help you.

I have stage iv appendiceal cancer, signet ringcell, but have been in remission for 20 months. I live in FL but had HIPEC surgery at Mt Sinai in NYC by Dr Umut Sarpel. I highly recommend you give her a call[phone number redacted]). Even if you do not use her as your surgeon, she will look at your records and give you her opinion. She is very warm and I was amazed that she called me the same day that I requested to speak to her for the first time. I previously had surgery to have part of my colon removed and debulking at Sloan Kettering then started my 6 mths of FOLFOX chemo. My oncologist recommended HIPEC after my chemo was complete but the surgeon at Sloan was firmly against it. I am so glad that I didnt listen. Dr Sarpel and her team removed my ovaries, tubes and omentum during my HIPEC surgery and found cancer on an ovary. I hope this helps you!

@lookingup3 thank you for that information it's great to hear of your remission. It gives me hope! I too have stage IV signet ring cell. I started XELOX a month after diagnosis, now I'm just on oral xeloda. I have found a wonderful surgeon, Dr. Baumgartner at UCSD. He's been great at communicating . I'm comfortable with the plan he has laid out so far. Considering this scary journey, I have been blessed with great surgeons and oncologists. Would you be able to give me a little insight on recovery? Or what to expect?

Hi, I can tell you about rare cancer in general, but not your type of cancer. First i'm so glad that you like your doctor at San Diego. That is 2/3 of the battle- a knowedgible and caring doctor.
I just wish you the best. Things should be good for you. Take care

If you are Stage IV, it never hurts to get a second opinion. Best wishes.

Sorry I couldn't post sooner, but I've been traveling, and had limited computer access. As GregP_WN mentioned, I'm a survivor of Appendix Cancer - been there, done that. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. The most important thing you can do for yourself is get yourself in the hands of an Appendix Cancer expert, which may require travel. Note: colo-rectal experts are not necessarily appendix cancer experts; you need a dr with lots of appendix cancer experience, as this is not treated like just another form of colon cancer. @GregP_WN, you may share my email address with Sylvc56 if she would like it.

@BarbarainBham thank you, I'm looking into that as well.
@abrub communicating with someone who has experienced this would be great. Thank you all!
