    New job opportunity is available. However I don't finish radiation for a couple of weeks.

    I've been unhappy at my current employer before my diagnosis and now this new job offer is available. They would need me to start early March. I won't be done with radiation treatments until late February. Should I take the job? Should I reveal my diagnosis before the actual hiring? I don't want to be dishonest. Please share any similar experiences.

      I assume that both your current job and your new job offer you health insurance. If there is a waiting poeriod before the new job health insurance kicks in you can use COBRA coverage from your old job to cover the period. If the new job is with a small employer then your health could affect thier insurance perimums when thier insurance company finds out about it so they might be more interested.

      That aside or if insurabce is not an issue then I would say go for it. You do not have to tell them about your diagnisis unless they ask. I would not lie about it if they do but there are likely restrictions on what they can ask that a Lawyer can explain better than I can so see a lawyer if it will set your mind at ease. I have changed jobs twice with my same employer twice sionce my diagnosis and have always bee up front about my situation but I have never looked for new outside employment so my experience is not the same.       I'm a bit confused. Did you interview for this job or was it offered to you sight unseen? Did they ask you when they offered the position if you could start in early March and if so, what did you say? How much time will you need off work for your treatments and how set in stone is the start date they are asking for?

      What does your diagnosis have to do with the new job? And if you are done treatment, your diagnosis should have no impact on the job....I say go for it!!!!

      If the status of your health is not questioned on the application or in person, then I would not think you are dishonest by not bringing it up yourself. You have received your treatment and you are ready to move on. To compare, if you had surgery for appendix or hysterectomy -- and recovered -- would you feel obligated to reveal this health history? As Peroll pointed out, Health Insurance would be a major factor in your decision - If there is no problem there -- then go for it -- life is too short to be unhappy at a job where you spend so many hours.       If insurance coverage is not an issue, go for it! You will be done treatments before you start your new job so there is no reason to disclose, unless you need a lot of time for follow up care.

      I'd say go for it! You are almost done treatment and you should be fine. You may have some burns at the end but they will heal quickly. Keep putting the Aquaphor on now. Also, I do not think you are being dishonest, you have a right to privacy. Once you are in the job, and you feel it is right, you can tell whomever you want, but now before they know your work ethic, etc. don't. Best of luck! Just think a new beginning is what you need right now and it is also a sign of good things to come after going through this stuff!

      In the 50 years I've been working, I've lived by two rules (and when working for the State, I was a union rep): 1) medical stuff is none of their business, and I don't say it to be mean - it is illegal for them to ask, for good reason; 2) never, ever disclose medical stuff to an employer or boss - it's too personal and is often used against the person somehow, maybe because it's human nature (I'm a psychotherapist) to target the weak. Also, disclosure subconsciously affects how a boss writes performance reviews - no matter how nice the boss.

      You know what I was in the exact same position and I started. I would get radiation on the way to work and then on to work. It was a great job. I didn't tell them at first but then found out how many other in the building had cancer like me, were in various stages of treatment and still working or were done with treatments. They were all very supportive except the pharmacist I worked with. It was the easiest job ever and he made me just miserable. No matter what way I turned he criticized me. I was still very fragile-emotionally and this old man shouldn't even have been working anymore. He is now retired (it's about time) but he ruined it there for me and I loved that job. It was at Northwestern University in the students health services building. I say go for it - no one could be a nasty as this old man. kimg09

      I've been it on 60 day probation. Is that fair to put someone on probation while undergoing cancer treatment radiation. Radiation has not been friendly, pain, itching, extreme fatigued.

      Is the 60 day probation because of your cancer (don't think that is legal) or is it a company policy? Its pretty standard with many jobs for there to be a probationary period for all new hires and there is nothing you can do about it if they decide to let you go during that period with a simple "It's not working out." as long as you were told in advance and sometimes even if not. If they say they can't use you because of your cancer, you would have a case, but I wouldn't want to work for a company with hiring managers that stupid.
