    pancreatic cancer treatment

51 year old friend was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer but told this was a slow growing type and would treat him with a shot each month until a better treatment comes along. I don't know what to think, i advised him to get a second opinion regardless. I would welcome any help & advice. thanks!

Who recommended the monthly shot, and what is in it?

I recommend getting a second opinion. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network pancan.org keeps a database of doctors who have experience with these cancers, and might be able to point your friend in the right direction. If it's pancreatic adenocarcinoma, stage 4, this has been called the deadliest cancer. As far as waiting for a better treatment to come along for that, it doesn't appear that this is possible without any treatment. So I'm curious what the shot is? Or is it a different form of pancreatic cancer?

There is another type of pancreatic cancer called a NET or neuroendocrine tumor that's treated differently. That's the type that Steve Jobs of Apple Computers had. So it's important to have more information about the cancer. If your friend gets a copy of the radiology reports or pathology reports, it should say exactly what they think is going on in there. This will help when looking for more information.

From your last message, "I was told that he has a slow growing cancer and its at the tail of the pancreas, I think they call it islet tumors."

Islet cell tumors are the different tumors I was talking about, and it's much less common than the other type of pancreatic cancer. That makes more sense to me. Here is a page from the National Cancer Institute:

http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/isletcell and more detailed information on that page http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/treatment/isletcell/Patient/page1/AllPages
It gives you an overview of the treatment options in the standard of care.

You might try searching for other people on this whatnext website who have NET neuroendocrine tumors.

That pancan.org website also has very good one-on-one support if you have questions. They can send out information at no cost.

The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research lustgarten.org also has information.

You didn't mention which type of pancreatic cancer your friend has. If he is in Stage 4, I think that he should have a second opinion at a major cancer treatment center as soon as possible. Especially at Stage 4, it seems he should be getting more aggressive treatments than a shot each month.

Please seek a second, possibly third opinion. Also seek out natural remedies to help oncologist treatment as well. Good luck!
