I am up in the mountains to the far north of the fires but the south winds blew the smoke 2 days ago even up to the higher elevations. We could smell the valley burning. Twenty two fires burning throughout California. Seems impossible all these fires are wild fires but I have heard nothing to the contrary at this point. The weathermen had been warning that Octobers are traditionally a dangerous time of year for fires due to the low humidity and seasonal transitional winds. Unfotunately this has proven to be especially true this year. As with the summer fires we have had this year, those on the front lines, the firefighters, have lost homes too. I can not believe the devistation I have seen in the town of Santa Rosa and elsewhere, the lives lost. Towns, houses and lives are still threatened, Calistoga , in the heart of wine country the latest to be evacuated. We need rain so badly but the next seven days look dry. The north winds are suppose to bluster again these next few days in Northern California and I believe those pesky Santa Ana winds are suppose to be back into Southern California over the weekend. My thoughts are with all those who have been evacuated, those who have lost homes and businesses and loved ones, those who run and help at all the shelters for both ecvacuees and their pets, and those on the front lines putting themselves in danger.

Half of the Country is flooding and the other is on fire. It's crazy.

The irony of the situation is that the fires are worse because of the exceptionally wet winter which caused a lot of quick growing plants to spring up. Then the rain stopped and it got suddenly hot and the snow melted too quickly and everything dried up

Me too. I used to live in the Sonoma area and i can very clearly remember what these burned areas looked like. I think they are finally getting a handle on that fire today.
