    Problems with colostomy

I had surgery on May 3rd and now have a temporary colostomy. This is actually my second colostomy. I had the first one for almost a year. During that time, I was able to go 5 to 7 days before having to change my appliance. I used Convatec moldable flanges and an Eakin seal. I have tried using the exact same products this time since they worked so well before. This time, however, I have leaks several times a week and for the past two days, every day. The past two days, I wake up to a lot of gas and stool in the bag and a leak around the side. Does anyone have any suggestions? I've seen my wound nurse several times and even when she changed the appliance herself to show me how, it leaked! The only difference I can think of is that my stoma is flat to my skin. I have tried wearing the belt, but it still leaks. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

I'm using basically the same thing. Except a hollister single piece pouch system. I'm also using a skin barrier product from 3M called cavilon which is a miracle product. My wife has had Ostomy problems for years and just started using it and it extended her wear time from 2 to 5-7 days. If you want, I can send you a few packets.

One more thing that helped was a convexity in my pouch. I have a chubby middle so it helped to have a solid form there.

BTW, my Ostomy is the only thing working. I'm back on FOLFOX chemo and feeling like total crap. Only 7 more weeks to go.

I agree with Harry. I had similar problems (two major leaks while working. nightmare). Once I used a convex application(the wafer, not the bag), I have not had any problems. Best to you.
