    recovery after mastectomy with reconstruction

I had bilateral mastectomy with silicone implants 7 weeks ago. I have constant discomfort and occasional pain. Generally, it feels like the implants are too big for my skin. What has your experience with recovery after this type of surgery? Thanks for your support.

Did you not have expanders put in after the bilateral?

I had a tissue expander inserted during the unilateral mastectomy, then 5 months later the exchange surgery to insert the silicone implant. It took 4 months to have TE expanded. I went to the PS either every week or very other week for a fill. I know some PSs go direct to implant but mine wouldn't because of the possibility of chemotherapy. Did your PS give you valium to relax your muscles and percoset for the pain? If not ask for it. Also ask for physical therapy, it is covered by insurance, and helps to increase your range of motion and reduces pain too. Both of my surgeries took longer to heal than expected. My oncologist is the only doctor who tells me that the status of my recovery is normal. Also the type of implant matters, the silicone is softer. Have you discussed this with your PS or PCP? Maybe it is time for a second opinion. Take care and keep us posted.

No, I didn't have expanders -- silicone implants done at same time as mastectomy. Thank you for your input.

Hope all is well. Your question reminded me of two places on the site where you might be able to gain insight. They are both experience pages that direct you both to procedures that other WhatNexters with breast cancer have gone through. The first is mastectomy and the second is reconstruction with implant. Perhaps you will find it helpful.

      Best of luck!

I had the expanders and still feel pretty tight. So, I'd think you feeling tight would make sense. I had bilateral on May 3 and a swop from expander to implants on aug. 18... So your situation makes sense to me!!! Hugs!
