recurrance of colon cancer - no treatment left according to doctor.

I saw my doctor today and was told I had run out of options for treating my cancer. I have had surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Basically I was told I had six months to live. I really feel like I have been given up on. There must be something out there left to try. This diagnosis today has left me heart broken and not knowing what to do next. I am not a quitter and the thought of sitting around waiting to die isn't something I will do. There has to be something I can do. Has anyone been in a similar situation and knows about some treatment that helped them live longer. I am grateful for this group and I thank you in advance for your responses.

Drop a msg on @Peroll he was told the same thing I believe about 76 years ago. There are lots of people on the site that were stageIV several years ago. Also @PhyllieG he is a stage IV colon cancer survivor of I believe 10 years.

Others will offer some ideas for you too. Keep the faith, and never, never, never give up!

I think its really unfortunate that your Dr. would not look into clinical trials for you. Are you at an NCI name cancer center ? Do you have a colon cancer specialist? Perhaps its time for another opinion. You can call the NCI for information and names of Dr's too. But thisis very important that you have an EXPERT in your cancer as part of your team

I get treatment for liver cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhatten. my Doctors specialty is colon cancer. One of methods of treatment is a Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump. An implanted pump that delivers chemo directly to your liver. I am assuming that your cancer has mestastasized into your liver.

Get a 2nd opinion with Dr Kemeny. Her "pump" has literally saved my life.

      Good luck!

From what I can tell you have only had one or two different chemo regimes so far in your treatment. There are several more that can be tried before throwing the towel in. I urge you to get a 2nd opinion and you probably want to get one from a research hospital or clinic that specializes in colon cancer. In addition to the chemo options, radiation and surgery there are several other treatment options such as cyber knife, radio frequency ablation and proton therapy to name a few. I would not give up until you have examined each of the options and they have been tried or ruled out in your case. As I have noted before you are in the position of needing to get your Drs to think outside the normal treatments, which may require looking for other Drs. Do some research and start asking lots of questions. Insist on answers and keep pushing until you get what you want/need to beat the cancer. Good Luck and let me know whawt else I can do to help.

Like you, I'm Stage IV and was also cancer free (one year) but then I had a second reoccurence and a tumor was found in my abdomen in June 2012. Again, like you I underwent chemo (6 rounds of Folfuri) which did shrink it somewhat. I had 6 weeks of radiation and then surgery where the tumor was removed in Feb 2013. The margins were dirty so they did radiation directly onto the margins in my body while I was on the operating table. All my docs and surgeries are in Boston at Mass General. They have an amazing cancer center and a team approach to treatment. My onc recommended testing my previous tumor tissue which I did in July (right after discovering the occurrence) - to see if I would qualify for any current research studies. I agree with everyone else here that you should not accept this from your doctor. There are other treatments to try and other docs to get opinions from. You are a fighter - Keep the Faith

No doctor can tell you how long you are going to live. Keep looking for options, fighting for your life. There are many What Nexters who have done it. You can too!

I have been fighting this monster with my sister in law that has stage IV metasized colon cancer for 3yrs. We never listen to the Doctors when they give a time line. Only God knows that. She has also gone thru all the chemo options available. She did a clinical trial at M D Anderson in Houston when we had gone thru all the standard chemo. I would check on a clinical trial. There are many and some are using immunatherapy that takes your own cells and targets your immune system by a vaccine. Good luck and never stop fighting.
