    Runs after running?

    I am almost one year since ending treatment and am returning to my previously active life. I experience cramping and diarrhea after going for runs of more than 2-3 miles or vigorous hikes of 6+miles. Anyone else experience this? Any advise?

      Please talk to your oncologist about this as soon as you can. I know that isn't much of an answer, but I would explain the situation when you call his or her office and try to get in as quickly as possible. Something is up and you need to find out what, but in the meantime please give up running and hiking or anything that causes this reaction in your body, and do less stressful exercise.       I know your desperation to become yourself----I have IBS-severe digestive problems-my guts are all messed up. I get to a level, then I exceed that level and have diarrhea and stomach cramps. I cut back a little and slowly build up- lifting is my demon.

      Go to your doctor-see if anything is wrong-if not run 2 miles less often-when you can run 2 more often-then start kicking in on the 3 miles.

      I was walking and jogging with my hounds from a little over a mile to 14 miles a day in the Rockies- but my stupid doctor nagged me into taking cholesterol med for prevention. It ruined my Achilles tendons, gave me nausea, my doctor decided it was psychosomatic-we had a bad forest fire, I'd go out and have ash on my face-everybody was short of breath. Then I had seizures and black urine-and my body is still paying the price. They call it statin toxicity.

      What makes it worse than cancer- the cancer will put me out of my misery-but people are trying to cure it. I can't say that about statin toxicity. I was in my late 60s, going out with my hounds and doing light presses and rows with 30 lbs, and doing my own landscaping-

      Sounds odd, but I like to dig. No heart history in the family. Your exercise might be over-stimulating sections of your bowel-they say that's my problem-sections of my GI tract are spasmodic-overactive, and the cramps start. I take a med for the spasms-it's kept me out of the ER. I'd ask the doctor if this could be a possibility-damaged nerves from whatever treatment you had-but you still need to see and talk to the doctor about it. I've had doctors ask me why I lifted-weights, bricks, rocks, and I tell them that I'm not ready to sit on a couch all day long--I'm not ready to die. This conversation began in the 1960s.

      dear friend. ....When I stated back doing more vigorous gym I had several kind of pains in additional to a incontinence that prevented me from running, jumping and doing any kind of aerobic activity with impact. .... my problem was that I lost so much weight during my chemo that my internal muscles were almost gone and very weak. ... so a all internal reaction happened each time I tried a more intense activity. ... so I had to cut some, adapt others and add some physiotherapy and hipopressive exercises to my phisical activities and it seems that my buddy is improving. ... talk with your doctor, keep on with your checkup and followup exams and make the necessary adjustments to keep doing physical activities which is just great for maintaining you far from your cancer. .... But respect and learn about your new body ..... Wishing you all the best. ...God continue blessing all of us

      Count yourself lucky that you have regained the energy you have.

      It took me four years before I could use regular toilet paper again and, although I am not longer incontinent, my floor muscles have not returned to normal.

      lamarcy - one's bowels can really make or break a run, eh? i sure know what you're talking about....

      first and foremost - definitely talk to your docs about these symptoms.... especially since your diagnosis involved your poopmaker!

      the next thought that comes to mind - what are you eating before your runs/ hikes? i remember back to when i trained for a marathon, and eating the wrong thing - even if it was just a slight variation on the right thing - was always a disaster. i learned that an apple before a run - even two hours before a run - was NEVER a good idea!!!! banana good. apple bad. apple very very bad.

      the next thought that comes to mind - what are you doing before your runs / hikes? i know that if i have a good movement before heading out for a workout, i'll be good. but if i can't make that happen, then i need to include a pit stop after around 15-20 minutes of running.... if i can't make that pit stop - well - it - uhm - sucks.... what are your routes? is there a biff or coffee shop or similar you can hit after your first 2-3 miles?

      what was it like when you just started running? did you have to figure out this side of the running equation? if you talk to distance runners about poo, man, it's hard to get them to shut up. bike racers too, in fact. poo is important business, and we all seem to have to figure it out. i know way way way too much about my buddies' morning poo habits.

      so, what i'm wondering is if you simply need to figure out your new routine? experiment with what you're eating before a run. go to super low fiber... have a strong (and i mean strong) cup of coffee before heading for your last pre-run bathroom trip.... maybe eating anything with fiber is a bad idea for you. consider experimenting with a gu or other energy style gels or chews.

      so - the good news is that tons of runners and athletes in general deal with this issue. what i hope? i hope you're just dealing with runner's diarrhea...

      I had radiation to the abdoman area, and now I have IBS (alternates between diarrhia and constipation). So, I can't even go for a walk around the block, because I won't make it. The physical activity seems to stimulate the problem, but sometimes on a bad day, I can't even make it to the restroom when I'm at home. I like to do my walking at work (lots of restrooms along the way).
