Sharp pain 3 1/2 weeks after hysterectomy

I had a hysterectomy 3 1/2 weeks ago and started having sharp pain today on my right side above my hip. It is constant. I have been careful not to overdo anything - no heavy lifting, only walking, started driving this week. Has anyone else had this happen? I have been feeling very good the last three days and frustrated now because I am in pain.

I was told to expect pain for up to 6 weeks. I think a lot depends on the type of surgery and where the incisions are. It could be a nerve that is healing. However, if you have a fever or if the pain persists or gets worse, I would call the doctor. If you are concerned, I would call the doctor.

I would call my surgeon's office, today, to ask about this.

Hi! For sure give your surgeons office a call. For me I can remember having more pain on one side of my abdomen and it was closer to the incision. I called the office and they explained that it was probably a clamp that they use during surgery. I think you should call ASAP even if its off hours to the doctor that is on call. I'm not a doctor of course but if it were me I'd be wondering about my appendix and/or gallbladder. I hope I'm not scarring you. But I can tend to think the worst and for me in this situation it wound up to be nothing to worry about. Let us know how you make out. Take good care now.

Thanks for your responses. Of course these things occur over the weekend, two weekends ago I had a UTI. I left a message for my gyn/onc office to call me back. I took pain pills yesterday afternoon and last night because the pain was constant and sharp. This morning I feel fine again. I knew it was not my gallbladder bc it was taken out about 8 years ago. The nerve endings or clamp makes sense. When I hear back from the dr I will let you know what he says. Just how that pain doesn't come back again, ouch!

Glad you contacted your doctor and hope you heard back from her/him quickly. For some reason almost all of my issues have cropped up at night or on the week-ends too.

Hugs and let us know what's going on.

Hi Kathy. I'm glad to hear that the pain is easing and you're feeling better. Remember that this was major surgery so you can expect to have pain for about 6 weeks. Remember to listen to your body and get as much rest as you can. After a hysterectomy, you can develop adhesions that cause pain. I'm 5 years out from surgery and because of adhesions, I still have pain at times. Take care and hopefully the pain subsides and remember to give yourself time to heal.
