since radiation nuked my saliva glands I can't pass up a water fountain in the hallway without a drink.

And when I leave the house the first thing I think about is do I have enough water bottles in the car? I buy those 36 count bundles of water bottles at Sams and keep in in my car. Is anyone else here as dependant on water as I am?

What you describe is common with the head and neck group of cancers. The radiation kills or reduces the function of the saliva glands. I lost most of my saliva production after my first two diagnoses of Hodgkin's disease, then this last diagnosis with a malignant right tonsil and the ensuing radiation wiped out what was left. I Keep a bottle of water, or something else to drink, right with me at all times. Now I have developed some sort of issue where the nerves in my neck are causing my throat to cramp and restrict. I have a hard time breathing, I cough, gag, heave, then do some sneezing. Keeping my throat wet seems to reduce the frequency of these episodes.

I had a parotid gland removed (saliva gland) a few years ago. But not through radiation, it was
      by surgery.
Never had the problem you have with water, but had nerves cut in my neck and jaw area which
of course do not re-generate. This caused something called "First Bite" syndrome. A problem eating things like berries & lemons. Still have all types of problems today, but of course much less.

Talk to your dr. next time you see him, that water dependency must be a real bummer.
