    Sleep Issues

    Anyone else have problems sleeping and what have you tried?

      Oh yes, I have had sleep issues. Since I do not want to rely on sleeping pills, I go the natural route. I was prone to insomnia before cancer and started taking Melatonin. When cancer treatment was making things worse, I heard the chemo nurse suggest Melatonin to another patient, so I doubled my dose from 1 mg to 2 mg. I also listen to my weather radio or other synthetic recordings at a low volume, and that helps me sleep. I also take naps when I suspect I would be up passed the bedtime I set for myself. HTH.       A few months back, I started using lavender essential oil I rub it on both wrists at bedtime. When I get into bed, I make sure that my wrists are near my face, so I can inhale the aroma. I think it works and maybe that is why it does. I hope you can find something that helps you. I good night's sleep is essential to our well-being. Take care.

      I’ve actually had great results using Rooibos tea. I drink it a half hour before bedtime and it helps me fall and stay asleep. An added bonus is that it also helps to reduce inflammation and pain. Sweet dreams and best wishes for continued healing.

      I was having trouble staying asleep. No problem falling asleep, but I would wake up every hour on the hour. I started taking Motrin PM and now I stay asleep most of the time now.

      I take one Benadryl to fall asleep and if I wake up I and can't go back to sleep I take another one. This works great for me and BTW there is research and studies that anti histamines can help with cancer.

      Try Melatonin, or even Sleepy Time Tea. Camomile Tea is also good.
      But I take a higher does of Melatonin-- 10 mgs.

      All my life I have had an adversion to sleep. So for me sleeplessness is a mental problem. Sometimes at night I find myself reaching for a cup of coffee to keep myself awake. So I would say save the most boring onerous tasks for before bed time. I have found that I should not read or do puzzles before bedtime. Do not go to bed before you are tired. If you wake up early get up and do those boring tasks. Another thing is to find out what is keeping you awake. My brother was also had trouble sleeping until he found out he had sleep apenia. Watch what you eat before going to bed. Eat those hard to digest foods for lunch. Do not watch the evening news. It can wait until morning no reason to let it rob you of your sleep.
      Accept the fact that everyone needs a different amount of sleep. Rest and sleep are not the same thing. For me 20 minutes sitting in a comfortable chair with my kitty in my lap is worth several hours of fitful sleep.

      Barryboomer, I am allergic to Benadryl, so that is out. But, might be beneficial to others. BoiseB I don't have a problem FALLING asleep, I am like GregP I wake up every 40 minutes. I don't know why. I wonder if it is hormone related.(?) I am tired when I go to bed. I don't go to bed until I am tired. I don't eat late at night. I don't watch the news. Thanks for all of the great suggestions guys. Beachbum5817 I am working through oils trying to find the one that will work for me. Hopefully, I will find one. Spikenard and Breathe combined seem to be helping the best so far. (Lavender doesn't work for me.)

      To sleep, perchance to dream... oops - I mean repair, not dream! 7-9 hours of sleep is critical to health; less than that and all sorts of diseases and obesity beset the person, and lifespan is shortened by as much as 20 years. Some people say they can get away with 4-5 hours sleep. Nope; they die early (lots of examples, such as Margaret Thatcher).

      Good book: Why We Sleep, by Matthew Walker, PhD, published in 2017. He's the leading expert in sleep.

      Caution: long-term use of Benedryl has been proven to cause dementia. OTC sleep aids such as Tylenol PM interfere with the sleep cycle such that we do not get the deep REM sleep that we need, which causes the same problems mentioned above. Melatonin sets the biologic clock for when to get to bed - that's why it's good for jet lag - it does not help with sleep disorders other than that.

      Blue light (LED bulbs, devices, etc.) interfere with a hormone that the body releases to induce sleep. iOS devices have a setting called Night Shift - the screen turns a warm tone. Go to settings --> display & brightness --> Night Shift.

      Here are some of the ideas: exercise helps if you can do it. Our bodies start to tire between 9 & 10 pm. An hour or two before bedtime dim the lights. Turn off the news. Stick to a sleep schedule. Avoid caffeine & nicotine after 12 noon. No alcohol before bed - it helps people get to sleep, but causes people to awaken during the night. Eat the large meal with meat at lunch and veggies at dinner, no big meals and beverages late at night. No naps after 3 pm. Take a hot bath before bed (then put your feet & hands outside the covers for awhile - draws the blood from the core, which tells the body to go to sleep). Completely dark, cool bedroom, no gadgets. Get bright sunlight in the morning first thing (hormones release, setting up sleep cycle). If you're awake at night, get up and do something relaxing, especially if it makes the eyes tired, then go back to bed. If you have an alarm clock, put it under the bed - do not look at clocks during the night (creates performance pressure).

      Fiddler, I have to disagree with you that 7.9 hours of sleep is necessary or even possible for some people. I cannot remember when I have slept that many hours in 24 hour period that was not an artificially induced sleep. That is during surgery. Last night I went to bed sometime between 11: 45 and 12:15, I woke up at 3:30 because It was cold so I went back to bed and watched the snow from my window until about 4:30 and I woke up at about 6:30 or 7:00. This has been my sleep pattern all through my life. I simply hate to sleep. By the way I have never been able to sleep in a totally dark room This has been the pattern all my life. My parents had to corral me and put me back to bed at 3 am, People who go on 4-5 hours sleep may die younger but hour for hour they live longer.

      Either I can't go to sleep or I wake up at 2am and can't go back to sleep. Here's what helps me.

      To go to sleep, I spray perfume on my wrists (lavender oil works equally well or better, I'm sure).

      I usually wake up because I have a hot flash, so I get up and fix a small bowl of frozen yogurt. I bring into the dark bedroom and sit in the dark eating the frozen yogurt, and I can fall back asleep.

      Does anyone have issues with nightmares? My sleep is frequently interupted by nightmares, and flashbacks. These were issues I thought I had put to rest but during chemo they seemed to be more frequent than usual, almost nightly.

      BoiseB: pardon my bluntness, but you haven't slept well and you have cancer. These are not MY ideas, they are researched-based conclusions by scientists. Thousands of studies back up what I reported.

      BoiseB: the research shows that you are remembering your nightmares because you are not getting deep REM and NREM sleep. If you want explanations, read the book. Sleep disorders are epidemic and are killing us. Matthew Walker (see my earlier comment) is trying to find a solution, but none exists right now. Sleep aids do not allow deep REM or NREM, either. We're stuck right now until a solution is found.

      After going through breast cancer myself and losing a friend to this disease, I went about a month without much sleep. My brain would not shut off. I went to my counselor and talked about it. She suggested I go see my doctor and get Trazadone. It works great! After three nights I was back to sleeping. And I feel great in the morning. I don't take it every night, just on days that have been stressful.

      Fidler, I am 76 years old and I have survived Stage IV esophageal cancer for 8 years and am cancer free. By sleeping less that the recommended hours of sleep I have lived 2-4 hours longer each day than my contemporaries. So if I die next week and my comtempories live 20 more years still sleeping 8 hours a day, I will still have lived longer than they.

      charnell - Finally, I hear someone else say they are allergic to Benadryl! (All antihistamines for me, actually). After trying everything, and I mean everything, Trazodone was a godsend.
