    Steroids before taxol

i have just finished four treatments of adryamicin and cytoxin, and am starting 4 treatments of taxol in two weeks. My nurse told me that I would be pre-medicated with a good dose of steroids before taxol. I am really concerned about this. I had a friend whose cancer treatment included steroids, and he gained a tremendous amount of weight. His type of cancer was different from mine, and was at a much more advanced stage, so his steroid dose may have been different than mine will be. I have stage two breast cancer. Has anyone else with type and stage cancer had steroids before taxol? If so, what effects did you experience?

Hello. My dad had taxol and carboplatin for his chemo two years ago, but I do not remember if he had a steroid. This time around with a different cancer, he is given the steroid Decadron/dexamethasone. No problem with weight gain because they're trying to keep his appetite up. He has lost 19% of his body weight. First time was stage 2b non-small cell lung cancer, and this time it's pancreatic stage 4.

Stage III here, but same dose dense regimen with decadron before paclitaxol. I did not gain weight. I was wide awake the night following treatment; I zoomed.

Believe me, you will be glad you had them. They are great for preventing the nausea that comes with taxol or taxatore. Short term use of steroids don't cause any significant problems. They did make me a bit jittery for a day or two but only slightly. They do increase your appetite, but any thing you gain over a couple of days will be lost again after chemo when you don't want to eat at all. I gained and lost the same 2-3 ;pounds every chemo cycle.

I gained approximately 40 pounds during chemotherapy, which included steroids; however, I learned from my insurance carrier I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure during treatment. Once treatment stopped the weight dropped drastically. I wish you the very best and strength for the journey.

      Dear Valentinegirl:
I hated the steroids they gave me before Taxol. I got both decadron and benedryl - talk about mixed messages! One moment my body was twitching like crazy, couldn't sit still, felt like jumping out of my skin, the next minute I couldn't keep my eyes open and couldn't get out a coherent sentence. I couldn't sleep at all the night of my treatment and had trouble falling asleep the next night as well. The steroids given with Taxol are meant to prevent nausea, the benedryl to prevent an allergic reaction. I did not tolerate either very well and they cut my dosage of decadron from 16 mg to 8 to 4 before I found a level I could tolerate. So it didn't cause any weight gain, but I was taking a fairly low dose. I wouldn't worry too much about weight gain but watch the other side effects - jitteriness, sleeplessness, etc. If you have trouble with these, ask to have the decadron reduced.

I'm not sure of all the pre-medication I received but I lost weight after I was given taxol and carboplatin (6 times, spaced 3 weeks apart). I had stage two ovarian cancer.

hi there - i struggled to keep weight on during the taxol phase of my treatment. i also had a daily experimental drug and carboplatin ever third week. every one is different. another friend of mind just finished, and she stayed within three pounds of her pre-chemo weight... WOW!

before taxol chemos, i had the steroid, ativan, and benadryl. the ativan helped me with just feeling anxious... and the benadryl put me to sleep. best naps ever, to be honest. loved the chemo naps. i got a double dose of benadryl because i had the dreaded allergic reaction. honestly, it was not a big deal, although it felt scary for a few minutes...

oh man - those chemo naps sure were good.... so very very good.

i usually felt darn good for the first two days after chemo... then steroid crash... then up and up... then repeat.

      good luck.

I was given Benadryl IV before each Taxol treatment to lessen the side effects. I had no problems and did not experience any weight gain.

I was given steroids before treatment with Taxoterra. The only side effect was not sleeping for a couple of nights each time. Not a big deal, I just got up and read or watched TV. I would gain a couple pounds, then lose a couple. I wouldn't worry about those meds, it beats nausea! Best if luck to you!

i always had steroids with my chemo, including the Taxol. i did not gain hardly any weight (i'm not too skinny to start with : ) but the steroids actually made me feel GOOD...until 2 days after chemo when the steroids wore off and i felt like crap. the steroids generally are a good thing...they gave mine through the IV then the chemo. there are TONS of different steroids, and i doubt you & your friend would take the same drug.

Sounds like you are on the same regimen that I was. I received the steroids for two days after each chemo when I was doing the adriamycin and cytoxan. I actually took only half the dose that I was supposed to take....initially, it was a mistake on my part, but since I did ok with that half dose, I continued to take only half. I, too, was worried about weight gain, but did not experience any weight gain at all. In fact, I lost a few pounds.

I will be taking steroids before my Cisplatin/Taxol chemo. It's every 3 weeks. Steroids with the cisplatin gave me a lot of energy. I was extremely talkative. It's once the steroids wore off on day 4 & 5 that I would feel like poo. Not sure how they will affect me this time around with taxol.

I have my first Taxol tomorrow and am to take 3 steroid pills tonight, 3 early a.m. And then know they will also be in my premed infusion. With AC, I did not take the night or morning before and at that level I did not gain weight. I am Stage III breast cancer I am worried about my blood sugar spiking big time with this higher level steroid as it spiked a lot with the steroids during AC.
